Had a fun Feather River steelhead trip with Kevin and his friend Larry yesterday. The crowds that fall can attract have largely departed, we did not have one bank angler in our way and didn't see another boat all day. Kevin and Larry got after it and we put some good looking fish into the net. Nymphing continues to be the top producer and it should continue to stay that way.

Here is a photo from a group that spent a couple days fishing Eagle Canyon last week.  They had beautiful weather both days and it sounds like everyone caught lots of big fish!

I just got back from a super fun redfishing trip to New Orleans.  The fishing conditions weren't always perfect, but we managed to land some awesome Redfish each day, and also some huge Black Drums.  Like all sightfishing saltwater flats venues, ideal conditions are clear sky and light winds.  December is prime time to sightfish for the biggest Redfish opportunities of the year, but the weather can also be less than ideal that time of year.  We booked three days, and got to fish all three which is the best thing you can hope for.  When we had good visibility, we had plenty of shots at large Redfish, which what we were primarily targeting.  We also racked up some numbers on some fun smaller fish in that 5-8lb range, which was fun for a while but being winter steelhead swing fisherman, we wanted a bit more of a challenge.  The big fish needed the cast to be exactly one foot off their nose for them to show any interest.  When they do eat it, it is super aggressive and they starting ripping line at high speed.  Just and awesome fish.  Off the water, New Orleans is just about my favorite city in the States.  The French Quarter, where we based our trip is less than an hour drive to our fishing destination.   You can easily walk to anywhere in the district, and enjoy some of the best music, food, history, and architecture on the planet.  If your fishing days get canceled due to weather, there are few places on Earth that I'd rather be for a fishing trip.  Look for 4 night 3 day hosted trips coming next December for this fantastic fishing, dining, musical, and cultural destination.

The flows are dropping quickly, there is a slight tinge of color from the recent storms, and the fishing was very good for my guests Steve and Dana. It was pretty crazy because the stars aligned perfectly for Steve, but Dana couldn’t break free of the half-pounder zone. Steve landed one nice wild adult and several “tweener” fish in the 18”-20” range in addition to a bunch of half-pounders. Dana found himself stuck in the half-pounder drive-thru all day but did have a brief encounter with a nice adult fish. With more rain beginning tomorrow, I believe our season is just getting started.

A buddy and I made a trip to the Trinity today to see what effect the recent rains had on the fishing. It had been pretty slow up there but today was a whole different story. The deluge we had last week made a huge difference. Flows are up, there is a bit of color in the water, but more importantly, there are a lot more fish and they are grabby! Most of our fish today were wild and were pretty acrobatic. More rain is on the way!

Here is a guest report from Tony Carbonell.  His group fished Eagle Canyon on Opening Day:Tough fishing conditions, but opening day at Eagle Canyon was a  spectacular and wonderful experience. We got to the lakes and were  greeted with non stop rain and wind. We were wondering how that would  affect the fishing but that didn’t take long to find out. As I was still  in the process of putting my rod together a member of our group had  hooked up on his first cast and landed a 5 lb. rainbow trout. It was a  prelude to our day. Fishing conditions were very tough with wind gusting  up to 40-50 mph. and torrential rain. Our group still managed to hook  50+ fish and land 40 of them. Most of them prior to our lunch break. A  good number of those fish weighed in double digits. Conditions  detoriated and the hail and thunder came down and it was impossible to  fish. Although the weather didn’t cooperate the fishing was still  amazing. If our group could hook 50+ fish in these conditions, I can  only imagine what we could have done with a full day. Everyone in our  group had a fun and memorable outing just look at the expressions in the  pictures and regardless of the weather the fishing was phenomenal.  If  you ever have a chance to fish Eagle Canyon you have to do it. You’ll be  back for more.

Boy was it wet today! Heavy rains overnight increased the flows and added quite a bit of color. My guests Jeff and Bill were game for another day of steelheading even with the steady rain. Both hooked into some half-pounders and Jeff came up empty handed after a great battle with a really nice adult. I’m encouraged by seeing fresh fish and expect fishing conditions will continue to improve with this latest storm. Looking forward, the forecast is calling for more rain this week.

I had a really fun day with my guests Jeff and Lowell. The forecast was calling for a lot of rain, but fortunately it held off until late morning before the soaking commenced. Both are dedicated trout anglers, but this was their first time fishing for steelhead. Lowell had the hot rod today - hooking into two very nice adults and landing one of them. This storm is bringing some heavy rain tonight and it is forecast to continue tomorrow and into Sunday. Hooray!

Did a morning half-day with my buddy Larry. We’re finally getting some rain and it’s a welcome change. The morning started off great right off the bat with some nice fish coming to hand. Then we had quite a lull but finished strong with a nice 20” buck. It’s supposed to really rain this weekend so we’ll see how that affects the fishing, hopefully for the better!

Another season of chasing winter run steelhead on California's redwood coast is primed to start. Last week saw the first flush of rain with enough water coming down stream to open our local rivers from their low flow closures. I was out on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, to see what was taking shape. What I saw was a small coastal river that had previously been sealed off at it's mouth fully breached, and quickly blowing out. Blown out or not, the gates had been swung wide open, and every fish that had been staging in the salt waiting for rain was making a run for it. I saw fish moving in every place I stopped to fish. Mostly, if not all, King Salmon, pushing up river with a vengeance. As quickly as most of the rivers under low flow restriction opened, so too they closed as they dropped below their CFS threshold. A few, however, have stayed open to fishing and the fishing has been good. I've been out the past two days and have connected with fish on both outings. Yesterday I found a nice wild adult hen and today a decent half pounder. With more wet weather on tap for this weekend we should see another push of fresh fish come in from the salt. As of this writing the Mainstem Eel will be the only river to remain open until our next round of rain makes landfall on Friday. Please remember to call the Fish and Game hotline to make sure the river you want to fish is open! 707-822-3164. We should expect to see most, if not all of the coastal rivers open to fishing by early next week if not sooner. Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday and is ready to dive into yet another season of swinging for steel!

Its time to book your winter steelhead trip on the Trinity River. Storms are bringing much needed moisture to bring fresh fish into the system. Once the creeks get flowing the winter run will filter in. Snowmelt and rain due later this week should get fish moving. I will be back on the river this weekend. I have available dates and are other guides too.Confluence Outfitters specializes in steelhead fishing in the Fly. Various western locations. Steve and I floated the Lower Sac yesterday in search of a few #troutpigs. I wasn't sure how the fishing would go as it was pretty cold when we started (35 degrees). You know something is wrong when you can't wait to stick your hands in the water to release a fish simply because you want to warm your hands up! The fishing was actually pretty good and we had action throughout the day on your typical caddis and BWO offerings. The highlight of the day was our hour and a half "distraction" of casting at what I'd call a "pod" of rising fish sipping BWO's and caddis. It's hard not to absolutely love the double dry fly system! There's nothing like watching 18 to 22inch 'bows crashing on some top water bugs! All in all it was a good day.

Had a great day on the Sac with Nick. We lucked out and enjoyed a day between the snow and rain storms and had the river to ourselves. We saw only one other boat! Everybody must have eaten too much turkey yesterday. The bite was pretty consistent all day; not off the hook but a steady number of good fish. Sometimes it’s not all about racking up huge numbers; a beautiful day, good weather, and good company all make for a great experience on the river.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Fall steelhead season didn't really exist in southern oregon, insead we had an endless summer.  Up until a few days ago, the typical day on the Rogue was a freezing cold morning followed by a cloudless sky and raging bright sun for the rest of the day.  We still managed to swing up some great fish, in relatively uncrowded conditions.  December could be really interesting, as I'm sure there are plenty of fish still waiting for a bump in the flows to make their way up river.

My guests Steve and JP decided to float the Lower Sac today and we were all surprised at how cold it was! Even with the “bomb cyclone” bearing down on us, the Sac fished really well. Steve and JP both hooked into a lot of fish which helped them forget just how cold they were – which was 35 degrees when we got off the water at 1:00! Today’s weather was very different from what we’ve experienced the past few months.

A low pressure system has finally made its way to the coast and is currently delivering the much needed soaking rain that we've been waiting for. It looks like most of the percipation is falling as snow up in the hills and mountains, making it hard to guess how it will affect our local coastal rivers. Right now most of the projections show next to nil for flow increases, but I have a feeling that a few rivers currently under low flow closure will surpass their threshold and open to fishing in the next 24 hours. How long they stay open and whether or not they blow out is another story. Stay tuned. Looking ahead conditions are shaping up nicely to bring us into the beginnings of our 2019/2020 winter steelhead season. There is more wet weather on tap for the coast heading into the Thanksgiving weekend accompanied by a low swell on Saturday. What does it mean? Hopefully that the gates are soon to be opened. Currently all rivers that are subject to low flow closures are closed to fishing. This includes the Smith River, Mad River, and Eel River. For information regarding low flow restrictions and current river status call (707) 822-3164. In the meantime, be thankful for rain and enjoy that turkey!

Father/son duo Bob and Ryan fished with guide Ben Thompson on the Lower Feather River today.  They had a great day - caught lots of fish and had fun doing it!  It's nice to see some quality fish on our valley steelhead streams!  The Feather is a great option this time of year.  Let us know if you're ready for a steelhead trip close to home in the next few weeks!

Slow

The Trinity, like other Steelhead rivers in the region, needs rain. Today I had the pleasure of floating the river with Jay. Things were slow but we had the river to ourselves. Even though the river is low and clear, some days are productive. Today was not one of those days. Rain and snow are in the near forecast. Here’s to tomorrow. Have a great Thanksgiving.
