Lower Sac: , by Luke Geraty: R&D at the Sundial Bridge...: 4 stars

I'm a few days late with this report but only because I've been on the river while also spending my extra time trying to trap the Easter bunny... turns out I'm better at catching fish than mammals. Last week was the last day to fish the top section of the Lower Sac until August, so I had a few trips up there and also did a little R&D on the last day of March. One of the nice things about using multiples flies when nymphing with indicators is that it often affords a chance to throw on some new fflies to discover what may (or may not!) be the next best thing. So in addition to the standard selection of PMDs, caddis, and rubber leg offerings, I had fun using some other patterns. Truth be told, some worked well and others were less effective (i.e., our trout seem to have an aversion to certain flies, ha ha). When attemping to use flies that have collars, purple hasn't been producing but orange and yellow have. I attribute this largely to the PMDs and our fish seeming to priortize those over other options. And let the record show that Kevin Kay proved that running a rubber legs at all times is not a foolish idea. He hooked and landed a nice 22inch 'bow on a black rubber legs and I decided I wouldn't talk anymore about tiny flies and technical nymphing under the bridge anymore, ha ha! In addition to trying a few new flies, I also was messing around with a new lens attachment to my GoPro Hero9, which gave an opportunity to try and diffferent shots than the usual "grip and grin." Now I need to mention that spring fishing is going down and the rest off the Lower Sacramento River is fishing excellent. We've been putting plenty of big fish in the net on other sections of the river all the way down to Red Bluff... sometimes even bumping up against a clipped fin steelhead from the hatchery. Plus I'm seeing more and more rising fish and have had a lot of opportunities to pull over and target fish crashing the top. Hit me up if you wanna get out soon! It's time for you to get in on what northern California has to offer!
