Lower Yuba River Trout Spey Trips
The Lower Yuba River is a great place to swing flies with a lightweight "trout-spey" rod.
The river's many broad riffles and runs exemplify great "swing water" and are populated by hard-fighting rainbow trout from 10 to 18 inches.
The Yuba gets a variety of hatches throughout the calendar year and the fish feed actively year-round.
Our typical Yuba River trip is a drift boat trip starting at the Highway 20 bridge and ending at Sycamore Ranch.
On a trout-spey trip we take our time and swing all the best runs.
Our guides also keep an eye out for rising fish.
We end up doing a fair bit of single-hand casting with dry flies on most of our Lower Yuba River trout-spey trips.
Mike Wright heads up our Lower Yuba River guide team.

Gear Recommendations for the Lower Yuba River
Rods & Lines:
We prefer 2, 3, and 4wt spey rods.
Heavier rods are okay, but they may be over-matched for the size of the fish.
Lightweight switch rods are good too.
Bring a line that matches your rod. Scandi lines paired with versi-leaders work very well.
Leaders & Tippet:
We typically fish 2X-4X tippet. Regular 9ft trout leaders tapered to 2X work really well.
Waders & Boots:
Chest-high breathable waders are the best choice.
In the middle of summer it's nice to wet wade in the afternoon.
Wading pants can also work when it's hot out.
Spiked boots aren't necessary on the Lower Sac.
Flies:
- Birds Nest, Natural and Olive, size 12-14
- Dirty Bird, Olive, size 8-12
- BH Prince, size 12-14
- Leech Patterns, olive and black,
- Zonker, size 6
- Soft Hackles, size 12-16
