Recent Fishing Reports by Dax Messett

12/11/17 by Dax Messett: Due to a cancellation, I just opened up my calendar for chasing coastal winter steelhead on the swing on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast.  I have a rare week of openings available from January 22-28, which is prime time. The Southern Oregon Coast in January should be on the bucket list for any winter steelheader.  We chase true chorme here, within miles of tidewater on multiple river systems both big and small.  These wild rivers have excellent swing water, beautiful scenery, and dependable fishing conditions due to the amount of rivers within striking distance.  Please contact me with any questions.  Enjoy your holidays! Dax
12/7/17 by Dax Messett: The upper Rogue has been fishing awesome this past week.  The weather has been amazing, with temperatures hitting the 60s in the afternoons.   Leslie and I have been hooking fish on the swing every day.  Our clients have been landing mostly wild fish in that 6-8 pound range. We rarely see more than one other boat a day on the water.  For late fall steelhead, it doesn’t get better than the upper Rogue!
10/3/17 by Dax Messett: My annual trip to British Columbia this year was as fun and eventful as always.  The theme this year was high water for the most part, as some biblical rain storms pummeled the region.  The mega storm arived just when Andrew Harris joined my group at Skeena Spey Lodge.  The storm was truly exceptional, blowing out bridges and necessating helicoptor rescue for some unfortunate campers on nearby rivers.  Drew and I did some epic recon to a remote part of a skeena tributarty to make the best of a blown water day.  Its always a pleasure getting to fish and spend time with Andrew, our fearless leader.  When conditons were fishable, we hooked, landed, and lost some truly epic steelhead and bright Northern Coho.  I saw Leslie Ajari catch her first giant BC fish on a skated dry fly on a river with just a foot of visibility.  Hard core angler and trip regular Doug Rohn seemed to hook fish every day of his trip, regardles of conditions.  Ted always seems to hook a monster or two, some make it to the net, some don't!  Dennis is always a pleasure to watch speycast, cover water, and spend time with on and off the water.  Just a super group of guys.  Next year I have another few prime weeks at Skeena Spey with a spot or two open for likeminded anglers who appreciate the pursuit of BC steelhead on a spey rod with our crew at the best lodge in British Columbia .  Contact me for details and availibility. For a sense of what BC is like, check out a little video I made at

Dec-Jan-Feb: Coastal Oregon
Dax spends mid-winter chasing chrome bright winter steelhead during primetime on the Southern Coast. The famed Lower Rogue and Chetco are the featured rivers, along with some smaller rivers that Dax has intimate knowledge of.
Mar-Apr: Olympic Peninsula
The biggest winter steelhead in the world run through the sacred waters of the Olympic Peninsula. Dax fishes the famed Hoh, Bogey, and Sol Duc. If you are a true steelheader, this venue should be at the top of your list for winter steelhead angling. It's truly a magic place.
May-Jun-Jul: The Fall River Valley
Dax spends the early summer months in the Fall River Valley pursuing wild rainbow trout. Dax loves head-hunting for rising trout on Fall River. He also takes clients to the Pit River, McCloud, and Hat Creek.
Jul-Aug: Lower Klamath Steelhead
Dax teams up with fellow Confluence Outfitters guides Gino Bernero and Leslie Ajari for one of the most fun and unique steelhead camps offered in the industry. The Klamath is one of California’s finest steelhead fisheries. We target dime bright steelhead and occasionally run into bright chinook on this trip. Great weather, excellent food, elite spey casting instruction, and dime bright fish make this a must.
September: British Columbia Steelhead
Every year Dax hosts a trip to the Skeena River system, which is the steelhead mecca for every die hard steelheader. Dax spends over a month every year in this region, for good reason. Truly Epic steelhead fishing.
Oct-Nov: Grande Ronde, Washington
Dax teams up with spey legends Scott Odonnel and Mike McCune to work prime time on the best dry fly steelhead river in the Pacific Northwest. For years, Speywater Lodge has set the industry standard for spey casting and steelhead angling instruction. The Ronde experience is a multi day float through one of the most beautiful canyons in the world of flyfishing.
