Fall River fished excellent today. I took Confluence Guide School graduate Steve Morikowa out for about 4 hours from 10:30 to 2:30, and it was an absolute crush fest instantly. We caught fish using dries, sinking lines, and the dirty nymph rig. The dries worked for about an hour then they shut down around noon. Still not much PMD action, despite the overcast. BWO comparadun was the ticket. The sinking line worked excellent until about 1, then the nymph crushed. Pressure was the lowest I've seen it in a week, which probably helped out and gave the fish an opportunity to relax and feed.

Fall River has been fishing good between 11 and 2pm the past 5 days. There is a little dry fly action but it's not going off yet. The streamer grab has really picked up, birthday boy Gavin hooked several dozen today. The nymph grab is pretty insane during prime time too if you can feed line and have the right rig on. The fish are in excellent shape, as always. The upper river has been mega crowded, if you aren't hooking fish it might help to move around a little bit and pound on some new fish.

Hat Creek/Fall RiverMay 28th, 2015The past holiday weekend was quite busy in most local streams and rivers, but the fish were happy and ate quite willingly. Fall river fished well on a nymph, and also there were opportunity to catch wild rainbows on a dry fly. The evenings produced beautiful thunderheads, but we were spared rain. However, the clouds did make for some beautiful sunsets.Mornings on Hat Creek produced a good number of fish slurping at a trico spinner fall. A downstream presentation works best for these fish, with the trusty Hat Creek skate to get the fly/flies into the proper lane where fish are consistently rising.

I took our guide school students Casey and Andreas to the Lower Sac today.  They learned a little bit about rowing a drift boat and caught fish using several different techniques.  We caught fish on nymphs under indicators, nymphs without indicators, dries, and dry/dropper today.  Pretty fun!  The fish are pretty fixated on PMD nymph patterns, mainly small brown nymphs size 16-18.  Look for rising fish mid-day.

I just had a couple of good days on the Lower Sac with Dan from Folsom and Jay from Houston Texas.  Fishing was a little inconsistent, but both days we got into some hot spots where we had excellent fishing for an hour or two.   There is a great PMD hatch in the morning right now.  Not a lot of fish rising, but the nymph grab is pretty good.  Both days the fishing shut down pretty hard after 3pm.

The Lower Sac fished decent today, the morning started out slow but the grab started to pick up around 11 am and stayed fairly steady till about 4 pm and then seemed to shut down ! Both Steve and Kieth each hooked quite a few and even managed to land a few, some day's it's just like that...  the bonus was they each landed some quality fish with Steve landing a 20+ slab !!!

Fishing has been tough the past couple of days on the Fall, The stormy/unsettled weather this past week has seemed to have put both the insect activity and the fish in a bit of a funk. The majority of the fish are still camped out in the upper river, upstream of circle 7 and the majority in Zug Bug and Spring Creek runs. Look for the fish to spread out over the coming weeks and fishing overall to improve. Some of the best fishing of the year happens in June and July, highlighted by the Hex hatch ! When the Hex are happening we like to spread the fishing out over the Whole Day,  morning spinner fall or streamer bite followed by a mid morning to early afternoon hatch topped off with an afternoon Siesta and finely capped off with the evening Hex hatch ! Put it on your calender, it's rapidly approaching !

I guided Cole on the Yuba river on Sunday.  There were no hatches all day on the river and fishing was definitely slow.  With the slow grab, Cole committed to  fishing nymphs without an indicator and was rewarded.  He worked really hard through a few of the best runs and pulled out 5 total fish with two of them being 16+.  Way to go Cole.  Hopefully the weather will settle a little and we can get back to a few more consistent days on the Yuba!

The Lower Sac is fishing well again after adjusting to the new 7000cfs flow level.  I just spent two days with Jerry from Oakmont and his son Mark from Tahoe.  Mark was new to drift boat fly fishing, but he figured out the program pretty fast.  Fishing was great yesterday up in Redding with lots of fish up to 19 or so.  Today we fished closer to Red Bluff and fishing was good.  We had the river all to ourselves.

The Lower Sac is fishing well, the flow's have stabilized around 7000 cfs and the fish have responded. There has been a steady hatch of May Flies from mid morning through early afternoon and a smattering of Caddis flies throughout the day. No time like the present to get out and enjoy one of the finest Wild trout fisheries in the Country!

Fantastic fishing on Fall River today. My client Peter had a double digit day and got a Fall River grand slam. He hooked and landed fish on dries, nymphs and streamers.  Early in the day, fishing a nymph rig was effective and he landed both large and small fish. The afternoon brought some wind, but it died down after and hour or so, and there was a solid PMD hatch. It seemed like almost every drift rose a fish, and he even hooked a fish in the 20 range. Later in the afternoon, the hatch was over and we switched over to streamers and nymphs again, which produced quite a few hook ups.  Smiles all around, life is good.

Headed out to catch the evening bite on the riffle. Dark brown caddis and yellow sallies were hatching in abundance. I even saw a few salmon flies helicoptering around in the mix. The fish were mainly targeting the emerging caddis, and I landed an epic brown and a classic hat creek rainbow, both on dries. Not too shabby for a half hour sun downer session.

Today was my first day on Fall River this season.  The river is in great condition.  It looks more like mid-June than early May.  Weed beds are thick and well-established all the way down to Circle 7.  The fish are already pretty dispersed, too.  There was a good PMD hatch today.  We had a couple hours of pretty good fishing mid-day before the wind came up and made things more difficult.  We hooked some 18 fish on nymphs, dries, and streamers throughout the day.

After an amazing winter steelhead season on the Southern Oregon Coast and Olympic Peninsula, I came down to start my trout season at our Confluence Outfitters home base in the beautiful Fall River Valley.  Despite the drought, excellent fishing opportunities abound in the intermountain area, particularly on Fall River, which is my favorite trout stream in the States. Fall River really picked up the last few days after kind of a slow weekend.  Fish are everywhere, if you know where they are:)  The nymph grab was pretty insane between 11 and 2, the streamer grab was so so, the dry fly fishing is sporadic, but will pick up soon.  If clouds roll in, look for solid PMD and BWO hatches.  Look for hexes in early June this year... The Pit River has been fishing fantastic, particularly in the late morning and evenings.   Hat Creek is fishing ok during the day, excellent caddis hatch in the evenings.   The McCloud is McCrowded during the weekends, but fishing great.  Go during the week if you can, or hire a Confluence guide to explore new water.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! The fish were certainly celebrating today by chowing nymphs on almost every cast in certain runs. A light, spring creek nymphing rig was the way to go. Fish were aggressively eating small pheasant tails and micro mayflies.   The dry fly action was a bit slow, with occasional rises, but nothing consistent. Small baetis dries produced a few opportunities early in the day, and PMD's were hatching around mid day with fish sporadically rising to feed. The streamer bite was fair with a few opportunities using sparse leech patterns.

I guided Brian and Barry on the Lower Sac yesterday as part of a large group from the Diablo Valley Fly Fishermen Club.  It was the first time on the Lower Sac for both of them, and despite some tough water conditions due to an increase in flows, they did a great job.  They fished hard all day and were rewarded with some nice fish.  Nice work guys!

The Lower Sac continues to fish very well even as the flows have been rising the last 2 days.  Flows have come up from 3000cfs one week ago to 6000cfs today and will be up to 7000cfs by Sunday.  I fished Posse Grounds to Anderson yesterday and Bonnyview to Balls Ferry today.  Fishing was good throughout the day both days.  Big and bright-colored flies are good when the flows are coming up.  A rising river usually means a lot of vegetation and other debris in the water, so it helps if your fly stands out a little bit.Don't forget that the section of river from the Highway 44 bridge up to Keswick Dam will close on April 27th, this coming Monday.  It will be closed through July 31st to protect spawning winter-run Chinook salmon.

The Lower Sac fished really well for us today.  I floated Bonnyview to Balls Ferry with clients Steve and Jon from Sacramento.  Action was really good throughout the day on a variety of nymph patterns.  We finished the day with some side-drifting without the indicator, which was also productive.  Flows bumped up to 4500cfs this morning and will be up to 5500cfs by tomorrow.  This is a great flow for fishing and so far the changes haven't thrown off the fishing.
