Spey Destinations in northern California and southern Oregon
Klamath River spey camp
Join us for a 4-day, 3-night camping adventure on the Lower Klamath River. We offer these camps during July and August as fresh steelhead make their way from the ocean into the river. The food, instruction, and fishing are legendary.
Fly Fishing the Lower Trinity River
From Douglas City down to Willow Creek, there are so many good spots to swing a fly that we can't even name them all. Prime-time for swinging flies is mid-September through the end of December. We use rafts and access prime areas on foot.
Spey Rods on the Lower Sac
Swinging flies on lightweight spey rods is a great way to catch trout on the Lower Sac. We use jet boats to access prime riffles. 4 and 5wt spey rods matched with trout nymphs like birds nests and soft hackles are the ticket. Best times are spring, winter and fall.
A steelhead from the Upper Rogue
We catch fish with spey rods on the Upper Rogue from August through April. We offer walk-wade, raft, and jet boat trips catering to the spey fisherman. Prime times are September-November for summer run and February-March for winter run.
A steelhead from the Lower Rogue River
The Rogue River meets the ocean at Gold Beach. We access the lower 40 miles of the Rogue River via jet boat. Every steelhead that goes up the Rogue River goes through this lower stretch. Our prime time to intercept these fish is January through March.
A southern Oregon coastal river.
Many of the steelhead rivers within an hour's drive of Gold Beach have great water types for swinging flies. We do both walk-wade and raft trips on these rivers. In a 3-day trip in the Gold Beach area you could fish 3 or more different rivers.
Fishing a steelhead river on the Olympic Peninsula
Dax Messett guides the Olympic Peninsula in Washington during the month of March. The "O.P." has several amazing steelhead rivers that are known for their scenery and their big fish. Dax does raft and walk-wade trips on the O.P.
A steelhead from the Applegate River
The Applegate River is a tributary to the Rogue River. It has a great run of winter steelhead that come into the river in February and March. The Applegate is on the small side but there are many productive runs that are perfect for swinging flies with a spey rod.
