Fishing is getting better by the day on the Trinity River.  Yesterday my client Richard and I floated 10 miles of river in the Douglas City area and didn't see another boat all day.  And yes, we found some nice steelhead, too.  The weather was a little chilly and the best action was in the afternoon. It rained a fair bit overnight and the fish responded favorably, even though the river didn't come up significantly.  Today was day 3 with Richard and I finally let him catch a fish before 2pm.  We caught fish throughout the day and Richard managed to land 5 five nice steelhead in a short day.  I saw a lot of fish under the boat today.  It's supposed to rain pretty hard tomorrow and that should actually bump up the flows a bit.  That means the fish will move into new holes and be in their happy place, ready to eat your fly.  This next week should be pretty good.

We experienced some snow and rain today, but not significant amounts.  It was a bit chilly out there today, but we found a couple of very nice fish that were willing to bite.  We landed one in the 28-30 class.  I saw quite a few other really nice fish today.  We're looking forward to the possibility of significant rain on Thursday.

Low & clear conditions right now on the Trinity. Had a chilly start Thanksgiving morning with Lloyd and Lee from Livermore. With temperatures in the low-teens when we started, Lloyd heated things up by hooking up and landing his very first steelhead!Fishing has been tough, but has picked up in recent weeks. Whether you're a veteran or novice steelheader, book a Confluence guide now and chase some chrome!

The Sac has been off and on the past week or so.  It's good one day, but the next the fish are tight lipped and you're trying to figure out what gives.  What do we do?  We keep after it and get rewarded with an epic day of fishing...like Bill and Mark had today!  The egg bite is over and the trout are back to eating nymphs.  Fishing the Sac this time of year is great because the pressure is light and the fish are big!

I did a spey-only day today on the Lower Sac with clients Gene and Lisa from San Francisco.  They are both great spey casters and they really enjoyed fishing the excellent swing water on the Lower River.  We fought with high winds all day and that seemed to put the fish off a little bit.  We landed a couple trout and Lisa hooked a big mystery fish that jumped and threw her hook.  Probably an adult steelhead, but who knows for sure.

Fishing continues to be challenging on the Trinity with low water and considerable angling pressure. Those that fish thoroughly and with accuracy are getting their fish. One bright spot is there are a number of larger fish in the mix ! Large Steelhead always make my day ! Who know's what next week will bring but one things for sure if you fail to book a trip and get out on the river you will never know.

We just hosted the Diablo Valley Fly Fishers on the Trinity River for a couple of days.  Fishing was challenging in general but there were some bright spots.  Rob tied his all-time record by landing 4 steelhead in one day.  Paul caught the two biggest fish of his life.  Other anglers caught a fish or two and some caught none.  That's how it's been lately.  Hit or miss.  We have had some large fish in the mix, though.  We taped a couple that went 28 yesterday and Randy Hamann's clients have landed a couple even larger fish the last two days.  Thanks again DVFF guys - see you again in December!

You can catch some nice steelhead on the Trinity River right now if you can get away from the crowds.  There were a ton of boats out today but we managed to stay away from most of them and were able to find some fish.  Steve and Dana from Chico had their best Trinity outing in several seasons.  Regular trout nymphs are working the best right now.  Be careful with store-bought trout nymphs - some of the hooks bend out pretty easily.  Or even break right off at the bend.  If you want to stack the deck on your favor you should tie your own nymphs on heavy wire hooks.  5 pound fish and cheap size 14 hooks are not a good combination.

The catching of fish on the Trinity this past weekend was pretty slow. The few fish that are in the river aren't really spread out, despite the little bit of rain we got the last week. It rained again yesterday, so today into this week could be better. Pressure remains very high on the river, despite tough fishing. Getting a steelhead or two is a really good day right now, as it is on any steelhead river. And if given the option to go steelhead fishing, one should always take it!

I spent a great day on the Lower Sac with Matt and Zach from El Dorado Hills.  The guys were new to fly fishing the Lower Sac, but were quick and enthusiastic learners.  Both guys had multiple hook-ups, hearty fights, and heart breaking moments with the ones that got away.  Matt got a nice bow to the net and even though the weather was a little mixed, it was a really beautiful day.

Had a great time guiding Jason & Bret on the Lower Sac. The father/son duo brought several hard fighting rainbows to the net while having the entire river to ourselves. Sweet stuff.  The egg grab is more prolific near posse while your normal good 'ol bread and potato nymphs work well around Anderson - below.

The conditions over the last three weeks on the Trinity have changed little, We have had a number of fronts push through but none have delivered much rain, we need inches not tenths ! With the low water both the Steelhead and anglers continue to be stacked up in a few locations making for some tough angling.  Having said that any given day can produce !  Spey casting and swinging flies may open up more of the river to you and can offer less crowded fishing, may not account for more hookups but can make for a more pleasurable day ! One big rain event will change everything !

Spent the day with John and Doug on the Yuba today.  Fishing was a little on and off.  We had a good number of grabs in the morning and netted two really nice rainbows, but by 11 am, the fish took the rest of the day off.  Beautiful weather and great company more than made up for it.

The Lower Sac fished pretty good for us today.  We landed a few big 18-20 rainbows and decent numbers of small and medium-sized fish.  The fish are moving back into normal trout water now that the salmon spawn and egg bite is tapering off.  We picked up fish on a variety of trout nymphs and egg patterns today.  The river has dropped to 4500cfs and will drop down to 4250cfs by Monday.

The Trinity fished very well for us today.  Mike and Alex landed several adult steelhead each.  Alex, who is new to fly fishing for steelhead, is probably ruined for it after his experience today.  He learned the casting and dead-drifting techniques quickly and was rewarded with 3 adults and 2 half-pounders in the net.  Mike did very well also.  Nice job guys! This past weekend was the busiest yet this season with tons of fisherman on the river.  Today was surprisingly uncrowded.

Fishing is back to great again on the Lower Sac.  We boated really good numbers of rainbow trout the last two days.  Fishing pressure has dropped dramatically now that the salmon spawn has slowed down and a lot of guides have moved on to the Trinity and other destinations.  We only saw one other drift boat all day yesterday and just a handful today.  There are still good numbers of salmon on redds and the trout are mostly focused on eggs.  We actually caught a trout on a nymph today, believe it or not.  The rainbows have been big fat and healthy with fish up to 18 landed every day.  We landed a nice 20 trout today that was about 3 pounds.
