Great

The last week on the Trinity has been great. I spent a few days on the lower section of the river swinging flies and working with clients on spey casting technique. While there didn't seem to be as many fish in this section of the river, it was nice to get out of the crowds and mayhem of the upper river. We even hooked into a few nice fish.  Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday on the upper/middle river the nymph grab was on. The small amount of rain we got on Saturday has brought in a fresh pulse of grabby fish. There were a quality amount of adult steelhead caught this weekend. The only downside was the crowds. As November progresses we should see the fish spreading out more along with the hordes of anglers.

I had a Great day yesterday with husband and wife Hayden and Sara from Woodland. Fishing started a little slow but quickly picked up when we encountered a fresh push of 6-8 lb hatchery steelhead, all bucks ! I think the little bit of rain we have had recently is getting fish to move and currently there are good numbers from Lewiston to Pigeon Point.

I spent the last 3 days on Lewiston lake with Al & Emil, the fishing was stellar, most of the Rainbow's were in the 12 - 14 range with a few up to 16.  Lewiston should continue to fish well this Fall and even into the Winter depending on water temps. If you don't have time this Fall, book a trip for this coming Spring, April can be OUTSTANDING !

We just had two cancellations for some prime November Trinity River dates.  Randy Hamann is now available on Nov 10-11 and Gino Bernero is suddenly available for Nov 16-17.  These are some of the most highly-requested dates for the Trinity River steelhead season.  Call Andrew Harris at 888-481-1650 if you would like to pick up some of these dates.

Fishing is good on the Lower Sac right now.  The egg grab is good but the fish are a lot smarter and the grabs much quicker than earlier in the month.  My clients Mark and son Matt from Reno both landed quality fish today in the 18-20 range.

Okay

Despite extremely low water fresh steelhead continue to trickle in to the Trinity, seems to be about a 50/50 mix of hatchery and wild. The flows have been UNDER 300 cfs in the Junction City, the lowest I think in more then a decade or more ! We've been boating a fair amount of adults considering the conditions.

We had a great day of wade fishing today on the Lower Sac.  My clients Curt and Chris caught rainbows up to 18 on a variety of techniques.  We spent most of the day swinging flies with light spey rods.  That was the most productive technique, but we also landed fish on dry flies, hopper/dropper, and dead-drifted glo bugs.  We landed a lot of fat, healthy 16 rainbows today.

I spent the last two days guiding Danny and son Miles, 13 from the Napa area.  This was Miles' first fishing trip and he learned the ropes very quickly.  We fished up in Redding the first day and landed some really nice fish in the 17-19 range.  Today we fished closer to Red Bluff.  We caught a LOT of fish today, but they were more medium-sized.  It was a really fun day with tons of action and very few other anglers around.

I guided Rob and Topher from Sacramento today.  We started the day with a drift from Bonnyview to Anderson and then finished the day with an afternoon fishing around the Sundial Bridge.  Fishing was mixed but when we found fish, they came in numbers. We had most of our encounters in three different spots.   Rob had multiple hook-ups on the day getting two really nice 16+ inch rainbows to net.  Topher  hooked up on multiple fish and had an epic battle in the last minutes of the drift with a dandy that broke our hearts.

The Trinity River fished very well for us today.  My client Bill put 5 adult steelhead in the net and had a fantastic time.  We hooked fish in several different spots and saw good numbers of fish in the various runs that we fished.  These fish ate lots of different fly patterns, too.  Stay tuned for more Trinity River reports in the next few weeks.

The fishing pressure has been very heavy recently, so we've had to work very hard for our fish - but that is starting to change.  I've started to see more salmon in the past 5-6 days, so it looks like the egg bite will run a little later than normal.  The fish are really starting to key on egg patterns and we've been hooking a lot of big fish the past week.  I'm thinking this will last into early-mid November.  It's not too late to book your Lower Sac trip for early November!

Today I had the pleasure of drifting the Lower-Sac with John & Jimmy from Sacramento and St. Louis. 35 mph winds made fishing challenging today, however the boys brought several beautiful rainbows to the net. The egg bite is definitely on. This is a great time of year to fish this river!

Had a great ending to this year's trout season on the McCloud river. The Golden Gate Angling Club was up from San Fransisco for a two day clinic. We went over wading safety, proper rigging, fly selection, and most importantly we got to explore a lot of the upper and lower parts of the river.  A mixed group of beginner and expert anglers, I really enjoyed spending time with everyone. I love teaching new skills to beginning angers and refining skill sets for the more experienced angers. We even got some much needed rain on the second day; nothing beats fishing in the rain! Looks like the rain dance temporarily worked, but I'll keep up the effort as we can always use more precipitation here in northern California. Now for full throttle steelhead season!! The fishing on the Trinity has already been very productive, and will only get better as the season progresses and we get more rain.

Patrick, Ling, Renee and Roger were a great group for day one.

Many of you know Sam Robinett because he is our host at Eagle Canyon.  Sam just got back from a summer of guiding in Alaska and he is now available to guide on the Lower Sac.  Sam put me on this huge rainbow late this afternoon.  For those of you planning your Eagle Canyon trip (Eagle Canyon opens up January 2nd, 2016), I recommend spending a day on the Lower Sac with Sam or one of our other guides the day before or after you hit Eagle Canyon.  If you bring a group of 4, you can do a 2-day combo trip for just $325 per person.  That is a screaming deal and a ton of fun fishing two great fisheries in two days.

More excellent fishing today on the Lower Sac.  Garey and son Jeremy from southern California had a ball hooking dozens of quality rainbows.  Our biggest fish today were about 19 and they landed a lot of 17-19 fish.Boat traffic is pretty crazy right now in Redding but everyone is catching lots of fish.  As November rolls around the salmon spawn will extend downriver toward Red Bluff.  That will spread out the traffic and there will be a lot of great fishing throughout the entire river system.

The Sac continues to fish extremely well.  I guided Rod and his son Eric from New Hampshire today.  They do a week-long fishing trip out here every year, fishing with favorite guides on the Fall River, Pit River, Klamath, and Lower Sac.  Their timing was perfect this year for the Lower Sac.  The fish were clobbering egg patterns all day long.  They had quite a few double hook-ups and landed fish up to 21.

I guided father/son duo Harry and Ben today on the Lower Sac.  Fishing was excellent from 8am until about 2pm and then it slowed down a little.  We hooked some very nice rainbows today and landed several in the 18-19 range.

My clients Bob and Charlie heard about the dry fly fishing possibilities on the Lower Sac from one of my fishing reports.  We set up our whole day so we could be in the right place at the right time to cast to a big fish on a dry.  The setup involved a lot of nymphing in the morning, since there is rarely any dry fly fishing on the Sac until the afternoon.  The nymphing was really good with some real quality rainbows landed on egg patterns.  From 1 to 3pm we fished dries, and Charlie sealed the deal on two quality fish.  The first was about 16 and the second was taped at 20.5.  That is a big fish on a dry.  Bob had a heart-breaking refusal on his dry by an even larger fish.  Fun stuff!
