Slow The Sac looks like chocolate milk this morning. There was zero visibility at the Posse Grounds and it was just as bad at Bonnyview. I'll check again later this week, but for now I would not plan to fish the Lower Sac. |
Great I had an epic day with Jason from Iowa, who is the first steelheader I have ever guided from Iowa. After 10 minutes of learning how to speycast, he hooked a giant wild hen. After another 20 minutes, he hooked a nice wild buck. It seemed too easy, so I had him skate a dryfly, and after another 20 minutes a steelhead crushed it...but alas, Jason violently ripped the fly out of its mouth....never to interrupt a steelhead trying to eat your skated dry fly. This of course will never happen if you don't skate dry flies, so Jason rules for his willingness to try. He hooked 5 overall yesterday. We saw only one other boat.Conditions are perfect for swinging flies on the Trinity right now. Good water temps and nice weather prevails. The River is extremely crowded in some places, and not crowded on others. Some stretches of river are void of fish, other stretches have decent numbers of fish. Rain would be nice. Good We had some good fishing on the Trinity today. Aaron and son Zach from Pacifica both landed their first steelhead. Big milestone. There were a lot of half-pounders in the mix, too. The weather was delightful. Come up and give it a shot. Aaron sealed the deal Zach with one of his steelhead |
Slow What a difference two days makes! The water color on the Lower Sac has gone from clear a few weeks ago to a nice steelhead green to a very bad brown today. The speculation is that Lake Shasta is browning up either from the ash flow coming down the McCloud or from erosion from the exposed banks of the extremely low reservoir. We'll keep you posted on the water conditions but for the time being I would steer clear of the Lower Sac. |
Great Fishing continues to be very good on the Lower Sac. Frank & Doug from the Sacramento area did well today, landing good numbers of fish of all sizes and a few big fish up to 21. The egg grab is going strong and the trout aren't interested in much else. The river was really quiet today in terms of boat traffic. |
Red Hot I just wrapped up my season of wilderness float trips on the Grande Ronde in Eastern Oregon & Washington. We had an outstanding season, with excellent weather and incredible fishing. Many wild steelhead over 30 inches were landed this season, which was the best in my 4 years guiding one of the most highly regarded steelhead rivers in the states. Along with our Spey Camp on the Lower Klamath River, these are by far the best steelhead camping trips available in the industry. Contact me for booking one of these special trips in 2015, as availability is extremely limited. My next stop on my steelhead journey will take me to the Trinity River. I am extremely looking forward to fishing and guiding on one of my all time favorite steelhead rivers. Shoot me an e mail if you want to fish. Dramatic scenery and swing water A superb, wild steelhead from the Ronde Classic Wolf skated up an epic wild hen right after I took this photo Home water Ryan Davey with a mega steelie Group trips are super fun Mist on home water |
Good The Trinity continues to fish well and there are fish spread out from top to bottom. There may not be gobbs of Steelhead but there are enough to keep thing interesting, my clients have landed fish over the past week ranging from feisty 1/2 pounders to one over 30 inches and over 10lbs. One things for sure you can't catch one from home, I have some prime openings in November and December. Here are a couple of pics from this past week |
Red Hot The egg grab on the Lower Sac is silly right now. My clients Don and Walt from the Russian River Fly Fishers hooked ridiculous numbers of fish today. They landed dozens and made it look easy. Very little boat traffic today, too. Get up here while it's still happening! Don with one of many nice fish today |
Good I fished with my client, Tom from San Jose over the last couple of days, welcome rains have animated the river, Salmon, Coho and Kings are all over and of course our main quarry, Steelhead. We managed multiple hookups a day with Chrome Bright Steelies and were able to bring several to hand. The weather forecast for the next week is mostly clear with a chance of passing showers, flow's should stabilize and or drop, hopefully not for long, we need the rain. Bring it on ! wild buck |
Red Hot The lower sac fished really well today. I took my clients Jeff and Jack up to Redding today to find some big trout. The trout were pretty stacked in the salmon redds, and they're a little smarter than they were when the salmon first started spawning. We found a few pockets that hadn't been picked yet and got a lot of hookups on quality fish. Jack landed 3 18-20 rainbows and Jeff landed a big 3# fish about 21-22. We had great action all day and the traffic on the river was very light. Jeff's big fish of the day |
Red Hot The egg bite is still going strong. These big Lower Sac trout are laser-locked on egg patterns, but our largest fish are coming on small mayfly nymphs. Today's rain didn't slow the action at all. My client hooked 25-30 fish during a half-day float! This action should continue into early November, so don't wait until it's over. |
Good We are well into Fall and a series of small storms have passed through NorCal and it is currently raining here up in Douglas City with more on the way for this weekend and into early next week, a WELCOME sight for sure ! I have finished up my season on the Fall river and Lower Klamath and my focus is now on the Trinity, fish are spread throughout the system and the tributaries are starting to pump in some much needed H2o ! My focus next September and October will be swinging for Steelhead on the Lower Klamath and Trinity BUT if you are not a Steelheader, I will be guiding a limited number of day's on the the Lower Sac and the Fall river for trout, Sept and Oct can be outstanding at this time of year on both of these venues. Not to early to start thinking about next Fall, it will be here before you know it. Shasta County Beauty ! |
Great We've been getting lots of inquiries on how the Trinity River is fishing. Well, its been fishing pretty darn good! I had a great time on the river last weekend. While the water was low and very clear, the fishing was still favorable. We hooked into few adults and juvenile steelhead. With flows on the rise and a fresh influx of rain headed to Northern California, the steelheading should only get better. We'll be on the river again this weekend, stay tuned for updates. |
Red Hot We fished down near Red Bluff today and had a great day. No steelhead or big fish today, but dozens and dozens of rainbows up to 16. The egg grab is insane right now, although the fish have moved out of a lot of the trout water already and are clustered in the salmon spawning areas. |
Great I spent the last three days with clients Mike & Sherrie from Gilroy. We used the boat as a taxi cab to get us from one prime wading spot to another. The wade fishing was really good, especially the last two days. We caught fish on nymphs, dries, and on spey rods. On the first day Mike hooked into a 20# salmon on a 5wt spey rod. We battled it for quite a while, but we needed a much larger rod to land that fish. The highlight of the trip was this morning when Sherrie landed a 20 steelhead on a 4wt spey rod. It was quite a fight! Sherrie swung up this steelie on a 4wt spey rod. Mike battling a 20# salmon on a 5wt spey rod Sherrie with a steelhead on the end of the line |
Great Fishing continues to be very good on the Lower Sac. I spent the last two days up in Redding with clients Bernard and Catherine from Mill Valley. The trout are really keyed in on the salmon egg imitations. We landed numerous fish over 18 and our best was about 21. |
Red Hot I just finished up two days with Bill & Chuck from the Bay Area. We did one day up in Redding and one day down by Red Bluff. The fishing was outstanding both days. The fish are really on the egg grab right now. I have seen salmon redds as far down as Red Bluff, and salmon are pouring into the river. We even fair-hooked a 20# salmon today on an egg pattern. Based on the number of fresh salmon in the river, the fishing should be fantastic on the Lower Sac for the next couple months |
Red Hot Trout fishing is exceptional right now on the Lower Sac. My clients Andrew and son Wyatt from Santa Cruz caught dozens of trout today. We also had a very close encounter with a chrome steelhead about 4 pounds. As good as the trout fishing was, I felt like we were fishing for the wrong kind of fish today, because the salmon were going nuts! The salmon were rolling in almost every run on the river and the salmon boats seemed to be doing well. It was great to see so much salmon activity - look for an incredible egg bite in a couple of weeks when these fish begin spawning. This is how we roll |
Don't miss the 3rd annual Fly Fishing Film Tour tonight at the Cascade Theatre in Redding. Confluence Outfitters is donating a full day at Eagle Canyon for 8 anglers to help support this event. Buy some raffle tickets and put them in the Eagle Canyon bucket. You can enjoy a great show and have a chance to win a great day of fishing, too! The show starts at 7pm. |
Great We hooked all of the small and medium fish in the river today I think. The 8-10 fish were really chowing down. My clients Bob & Bob landed dozens of the small fish but also landed a few 18 rainbows throughout the day, too. There are a few salmon around but not much evidence of them spawning below Bonnyview yet. We had good luck on small mayfly nymphs. The egg grab should improve over the next few weeks. |
