About the Weaverville Area

Weaverville is our home base for steelhead fishing from mid-September through March. The town is right in the middle of the best steelhead runs on the upper part of the Trinity River. We can go upstream to Lewiston or Douglas City or downstream to Junction City and beyond. In the early part of the season we do a lot of trips further downstream, but all within an hour of Weaverville. Weaverville has good restaurants, numerous hotels, and a great supermarket.

Fishing doesn't end when the steelhead season is over. Weaverville and the nearby town of Lewiston are also a great place to stay for summer trout fishing. Lewiston Lake, a tailwater reservoir below Trinity Dam, has great trout fishing year-round. The tributaries to Trinity Lake offer excellent small stream fly fishing from May through August.

Guide Destinations near Weaverville
Fly Fishing the Trinity River
The Trinity River is California's most productive steelhead fishery. There are six different floats just up and downstream from Weaverville. Prime-time is from October through March. Trinity steelhead average about five pounds.
Fly Fishing the Lower Trinity River
The lower portions of the Trinity also have excellent steelhead fishing. We primarily fish these lower reaches with spey rods. We use rafts and access prime areas on foot. This lower section begins about 45 minutes from Weaverville.
Upper Trinity River
Tributaries to Trinity Lake
Summer is a great time to fish the tributaries to Trinity Lake. The Upper Trinity River, Coffee Creek, and other streams offer endless opportunities for dry fly and dry/dropper fishing. A 3wt rod is perfect for these small streams.
Fly Fishing Lewiston Lake
Lewiston Lake is a long narrow reservoir just below Trinity Dam. It is used for power generation so there is frequently a noticeable current flowing through the lake. Lewiston Lake is filled with rainbow trout that average over 12". Sight-fishing opportunities abound.

Best Times to Come
For Steelhead: Steelhead are in the river in good numbers from October through March. Any time can be good in this time frame. Most of our fish are summer-run fish, so we're not dependent on storms to bring fish into the river. They gradually work their way upstream and are typically present in all parts of the river system. View our Trinity River page for more info on the steelhead fishing.
Spey Casters: We start booking spey-rod steelhead trips on the lower Trinity River mid-September. Swinging flies for Trinity steelhead works really well from mid-September through December. As the water cools, the swing fishing gets a lot tougher in January and February. We sometimes have good luck in March, but in general we steer all of our spey anglers to the mid-September through December timeframe. View our Trinity River Spey page for more info.
Trout Fishing: Trout fishing on Lewiston Lake is good year-round, but the prime times are March-October. Trout fishing on the tributaries to Trinity Lake is good May-October with the prime time being May through July.
