You've probably noticed it's hot! Things do slow down this time of year but early morning and late evening can offer some nice fishing. The mountains are also usually about 10 degrees cooler than the valley. We'll often wet wade this time of year and combined with the lower temps, it's a nice way to cool off. The crew's been out on Fall River, the Trinity, the Yuba, Hat Creek and the Upper Sac. Reach out to us for a specific report if you're interested in booking a trip on any of these waters. Guide Tip: Good mechanics make your cast work. Trust your mechanics and you'll spend more time fishing and less time fixing tangles.

Fisheries change, they cycle through ups and downs. If your annual go-to isn't fishing its best, a river that's not on your radar might offer a better experience. Our guides know what's fishing and what's not. A new river can also give you a chance to do something different, like throw dries or pull streamers. California's great because you have options and we're happy to talk with you about them when booking a trip.

If you like a dry fly challenge, Hat's a good place to test your skills. I usually start the day nymphing and then, once the bugs get moving, switch tactics to target rising fish with small dries on light tippet. It's technical and it's hard but it's so much fun watching a fish gobble your perfectly presented fly. Several clients put all the pieces together and have been rewarded with hard to fool fish. GUIDE TIP: Pay attention to and understand different rise forms. The bugs you see may not be what the fish are eating.
