Patient Instruction for Beginners
$500-550 Full Day
$400 Half Day

Prices are for 1 or 2 anglers. A 3rd angler can be added on a wade trip for an additional fee.

One of the things we excel at is introducing people to the sport of fly fishing. Our guides are patient and know how to get new anglers off to a good start.

We can set up a "Learn to Fly Fish" trip based out of the following areas: Redding, Red Bluff, Burney, Mt Shasta City, Fall River Mills, and Sacramento, California.

Our "Learn to Fly Fish" trips include everything you need for a day of fly fishing. We provide the rods, reels, flies, and all of the other terminal tackle. If you don't have waders and boots, that's no problem! We rent quality waders and boots for $45/day for adults and kid's rentals are free!

Our beginner anglers come in two main types. Some are focused on catching fish their first day and others want a thorough introduction to the gear and techniques so they can become a true "DIY" fly fisher. Our guides recognize the difference and are happy to put on their instructional hat or their guide hat depending on our guest's preferences.

Our Recommended Progression for Beginners

We have two main types of "Learn to Fly Fish" trips: Drift Boat trips and Wade Trips. If you have the time to do two days on the water, consecutive or not, our #1 recommendation is to do a drift boat trip and then a wade trip. If you have just one day to spend with us, then your choice depends on what you want to accomplish. Drift boat trips are a better bet if you want to experience fly fishing without having to learn too much about the gear and tackle, all while having an excellent chance at catching multiple quality wild trout on your first day of fly fishing. Wade trips are a better choice if you want to get your feet wet and learn more about the gear and techniques so you can fish on your own later.

Drift Boat trips are great for beginner fly fishers
Drift Boat Trips

Drift Boat Trips are a great choice if you want to see what fly fishing is all about without getting too deep in the details (or the river!). You can show up in your street clothes and hop right in the boat. We start with a short instructional session where you learn the basics of nymph and indicator techniques, and then you're fishing! Beginners have an excellent chance of landing quality wild trout on their first day of fly fishing. The Lower Sac in Redding is our top venue for drift-boat "Learn to Fly Fish" trips, but at certain times of year we can do them on the Lower Feather River and Lower Yuba River.

Wade Fishing is the best way to learn how to fly fish
Wade Trips

Wade Trips are the best choice if you are seeking to become a "DIY" fly fisher. Since we aren't locked in to a lengthy float on the river, we can spend time on teaching multiple techniques and learn how to fish different water types. You can learn about and try out all the gear, from waders and boots to rods and reels and flies. Most wade trips are good venues for learning multiple techniques, including dry fly, dry/dropper, and nymph techniques. We can rent waders if you do not have your own. Good areas for wading "Learn to Fly Fish" trips include the Upper Sac, McCloud, Hat Creek, and Burney Creek.
