About the Fall River Mills Area

For six months of the year, from late April through October, we call Fall River Mills our home base for trout fishing. Fall River itself is a huge draw for fly fishers. Its crystal clear spring-fed waters are filled with big wild trout. But our float trips on Fall River are just one of many great fishing destinations in this area. In 20 minutes we can be on Hat Creek or Burney Creek. In 30 minutes we can be on the Pit River. In 40 minutes we are on the upper McCloud. In an hour we can fish the lower McCloud and some of our favorite small streams. On many of our guide trips we hit multiple fisheries in a single day. The variety of fly fishing opportunities that this area offers is amazing.

Fall River Valley is reminiscent of Montana's Big Sky Country. The fertile valley floor is surrounded by mountains, including the 14,262' Mt. Shasta. There are many parts of the valley from which you can see both Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. Fall River Valley is a paradise for ranching, agriculture, fly fishing, birding, and waterfowl hunting. The communities of Fall River Mills and McArthur offer great options for meals and lodging. You can stay at a vacation rental on the river, at a riverside lodge, at a motel in town, or at one of the local RV Parks. Fall River Mills is just an hour and 15 minutes from Redding, but it feels like a whole other time zone.

Guide Destinations near Fall River Mills
Fly Fishing Fall River
The Fall River is the biggest draw for anglers visiting the Fall River Valley. With an abundant population of wild trout and consistent spring-fed flows, the river provides many opportunities to connect with big fish each day. We fish Fall River from small flat-bottomed boats.
Fly Fishing Hat Creek
Just 20 minutes from Fall River Mills, Hat Creek provides a spring creek experience that requires getting your feet wet. Wading is fairly easy, but the fishing can be technical. There is a great hatch of stoneflies in May and June and a consistent trico spinner fall throughout the summer.
Fly Fishing Pit River
The Pit River below Lake Britton dam is about 30 minutes from Fall River Mills and well worth the drive. This is a very physical fishery that requires strong legs and a sturdy wading staff. This river has a tremendous population of hard-fighting wild rainbows.
Fly Fishing Burney Creek
Burney Creek is the source of Burney Falls, a 129 ft waterfall inside McArthur-Burney Falls State Park. There is good fishing above and below the falls. This is a small stream and is fun to wet wade in the summer. Burney Creek is about 25 minutes from Fall River Mills.
Fly Fishing the McCloud River
The McCloud River is perhaps the most scenic of all the rivers in Northern California. The Upper McCloud, above McCloud Reservoir, is just 45 minutes from Fall River Mills. The Lower McCloud is about an hour and 15 minute drive. Both sections have a lot to offer.
Fly Fishing in the Modoc National Forest
Local Small Streams
We have some excellent dry fly and dry/dropper fishing in some of the small streams within an hour of Fall River Mills. These lesser-known destinations make a great combination with fishing some of the larger streams. Bring your three-weight!
