I just talked to Gino, who was on the river the last two days.  He said yesterday they landed 2 fish on their spey rods and hooked a couple more on nymphs.

Today was day 2 with clients John & Jack.  John hogged all the fish yesterday, but today was Jack's turn.  Jack landed the biggest brown of his life, a 25 beauty.  He also caught a buck steelhead about 6 pounds.  John landed a nice steelie, too.  We floated in the Douglas City area.  Pressure was light, but the fish were a bit scattered.

We had the trashy trifecta on the Trinity today, landing steelhead, salmon, and a sucker!  A proper trifecta would include a brown trout instead of the sucker.  Maybe tomorrow...  Fishing was a bit tougher today.  We found fish in our first spot and our last spot and in one spot in between.  We covered a lot of water in the Junction City area.  I saw a couple good pods of steelhead, but they weren't biters.  My client John managed to land a really nice buck steelhead at the end of the day.

Here are a few photos sent by Gino's client Ted.  Ted fished with Gino on Wednesday and Thursday.  They managed to swing up three great fish on the spey rod.  Who says fish won't crush a swung fly when the water temps are in the 30s?

The conditions remain low, clear and cold here on the Trinity. With that said the temps are moderating a bit and the brutally cold weather seems to be behind us for now. The up side is that there are a fair amount of fish around and most seem to be Wild ! Here are a few pics from the past couple of day's.

I guided Rick & John from Reno today on the Trinity.  The last time they came they landed about 10 fish.  It wasn't like that today, but John managed to land 3 nice fish and Rick had an exciting hook-up too.  There is still a ton of snow on the ground in Junction City.  The Pigeon Point boat ramp was covered with icy snow and was a little exciting at the end of the day.  Nymphs continue to work best, although we had one hookup on an egg pattern today.

I guided Paul from Berkley today in some of the absolute coldest weather in years. Here on the Trinity we received a hefty amount of snow on Friday, well over 5 inches at the river's edge. Water temps are very cold, but regardless there are steelhead that will move to the fly. Today, we hooked 2 and landed one, which was a beautiful wild hen in that 27 - 28 class that was as bright as you will see this far up river. That aggressive fish would have eaten a well swung fly, even in this cold weather.

Today was day two with Mike & John from Sacramento.  It was a beautiful day and much warmer with the sun shining on all the new snow.  We floated the Douglas City area and found a few fish in the last 2 hours of the day.  Mike landed a hot wild fish and John lost a big one after a lengthy fight.  It was a heart-breaker, but at least we got to see it up close.

I guided a couple of sports from the Sacramento area today.  The snow started in earnest around 2pm, but we had done our damage by then.  Mike & John landed 3 nice steelhead and one salmon.  We had the propane heater on all day and had hot cocoa on the river.  As Mike says, there isn't such a thing as bad weather, just bad gear.  Everyone stayed warm and we had a great time.  By the time I got home there was nearly six inches of snow on the ground in Douglas City.

I spent the day swinging flies with Chris from Washington.  He swung up a nice wild fish on a big leech.  It was his first Trinity River steelhead.  It's amazing that you can swing up a fish when air temps are in the 20s and water temps are in the 30s!

We had 5 hours of ice-free fishing today, but the fish were on the job.  We're at the front end of an extreme cold period that should last through the weekend complete with significant amounts of snow on Friday.  It was comically cold today, especially in the morning.  Flies froze to my workbench next to my seat.  My net froze and won't extend.  Loops of fly line would touch the rod and instantly freeze to it.  Despite all that, we hooked about a dozen steelhead and landed a huge salmon, too.  Awesome day on the river.

The Trinity is low, clear, cold, and crowded...not a good recipe for productive steelhead angling.  However it has had its moments this past week.  My clients Rich and Brent hooked 4 steelhead swinging yesterday on their 2nd day ever speycasting.  A good way to learn how to speycast is to actually go fishing with a guide that has the proper gear and lots of experience teaching the art form, like one of us from Confluence Outfitters team.     Fishing was excellent after we got that last bit of rain, my clients were hooking up swinging small intruder style patterns.  We are hooking both awesome wild fish and some big hatchery bucks.   This weekend is going to be cold, so bundle up if you come.  There is a decent amount of fish in the river, you just have to cover water and fish well to have a few encounters.  Word on the street is that a bunch of fish are pushing up from the Willow Creek area, so some new players are coming...

This fishing report was going to be about the artistry of the cast and the beauty of the Trinity River steelhead venue, but then we actually hooked some fish around 3pm.  We hooked 4 fish all in one spot and they were MASSIVE fish for the Trinity.  8-10 pounds each, and none of them made it to the net, despite some lengthy battles.  We fished a great float today where we saw not a single other boat or fisherman.

Fishing is getting tough again on the Trinity.  We hooked two really nice fish today, and Erin from Washington landed her first ever steelhead on her one and only opportunity of the day.  It was a great fish and quite a battle.  Expect challenging fishing to continue until we get some more rain.

We pulled the rabbit out of the hat at about 4:15pm today.  Bob from San Diego had three other encounters with steelhead, but we managed to seal the deal on a nice one just in time.  The river is getting lower by the day.  The rain last week helped disperse the fish, so there are fish in most of the spots.  They're just a little tough to get at times.  The fish are pretty dispersed throughout the Junction City area and I've heard reports of some fishing moving up into the Douglas City area.  We landed our fish on a glo bug today.

Today was my 2nd day with Rich from Pasadena.  We caught fish from start to finish today, landing 6 nice steelhead and losing a few more.  Five were wild fish.  We saw a lot of steelhead moving upstream today, also.  Conditions look really good for the next two weeks.

The fish were on the move today on the Trinity.  We floated about six miles and made a ton of great drifts before connecting with a fish.  We finished strong with 2 nice 5-6 pound steelhead, both wild.  We watched hundreds of Coho charge up river today.
