Gino just had a couple of prime dates open up next week on the southern Oregon Coast.  He now has Thursday and Friday February 16/17 available.  The rivers are dropping into shape and fishing should be good.  These are Gino's only dates left open in February.

We hosted the Oakland Casting Club today at Eagle Canyon.  We had a great group of guys that ran the gamut from total beginners to competition casters.  Everyone hooked into fish and had a good time.  Glen (see photo) said "Our group had a fantastic time. Thank you for your hospitality."  Andy told us "there were lots of hook-ups and huge rainbows to hand through-out the day. A #10 chartreuse bunny leech produced incredibly well in the last hour of the evening."  Glad to hear it and we hope to have your group back again soon!

Randy and I spent the last couple of days guiding guests John, Barrett & Dean.  We had the river to ourselves most of the time and enjoyed some better-than-expected weather.  Everyone landed adult fish and Dean hooked one that was one of the biggest Trinity fish we've ever seen!  We're catching fresh winter-run fish right now with just an occasional downstreamer in the mix.  The river was starting to color up a little bit this afternoon - stay tuned for current river conditions.

The Trinity continues to fish fairly consistantly for Winter Run Steelhead, most of the fish that I have encountered over the past week and a half have been in the 3-8 lb class, a mix of wild and hatchery with the vast majotity being wild. Some days we hook 4-6 somedays we get spanked, been averaging about one fish per angler per day. which I think is to be expected when fishing for Winter Steelhead. The Great news is that a fair number of fish that have been landed lately by my clients have come on the Swing !Tight Lines !

The fish aren't jumping into the boat right now, but there are fish to be caught on the Trinity River.  I spent the last two days with clients Dan and Pete.  We solved most of the worlds problems and managed to land three nice adult fish while we were at it.  We also landed a nice brown and a rainbow.  The best fish was Pete's 8# hatchery fish this morning.  The river is in great shape, albeit pretty high down around Junction City.  Traffic is a little heavy on the upper floats.  The water clarity is excellent - almost too clear.  Snowmelt runoff is pouring in from every tiny creek and the scenery is amazing right now.

Fishing report from our guest Dave:Our party of 3, Cicely, Robin and Dave had a fun day with decent conditions, water clarity was OK in spite of recent storms. There were periods of dead calm where  it was super tough to get bit. As usual fish got more active when wind picked up.We hooked a lot more fish  than we landed with some epic fights ending in defeat. Dave managed to land this chunky monkey 12 pounder.

Fished the Trinity for 3 days with two different sets of clients.   Fished from Steelbridge to Pigeon Point.   Averaged about 3 hookups per day with most guides reporting similar numbers.   We lost several large fish over those three days, but the pursuit was a lot of fun.  The fish are in and they're selective.  River was blowing out even above Weaver Creek on Wednesday, 1/18.  If you're fishing the Trinity tomorrow (1/19), may the force be with you....

River conditions were great today on the Trinity.  I guided Luke from Red Bluff and Eric from Redding.  We covered a lot of water and managed to find them both a nice big wild fish.  Luke also landed a few smaller fish.  We had a lot of fun and had the river pretty much to ourselves.

Once the Trinity setlled down from a giant churning froth of mud and debris I wondered whether there would be any Steelhead around or if they all boogied up into there natal tribs, well the good news is there are quite a few fresh, wild winter run fish the came up under the high water conditions, most are in the 2 -5 lb range but the 1st fish of the day yesterday was a beautiful wild buck in excess of 10lbs. The wheather forecast is wild as well so make a break for it when things settle down for a day or two.

Friday the 13th, full moon, semi-blown river conditions... If one was superstitious you'd want to stay home with windows locked, shudders closed. Besides dealing with some icy guides in the morning, veteran anglers Matt & Lenny hooked up with fish on swinging flies and nymphing. The river had a nice green tint to it w decent visability.

Here is a guest report from Will Dea:Although fishing was somewhat challenging due to the recent weather, we still had a great time. Everyone hooked into fish and a number of nice sized ones were landed. Flies that seem to work best for our group were dark small leech/bugger patterns in sizes 8-12 (crawfish orange, black, dark purple), dark olive damsel nymphs, and flashback PT's. Best times were in the early morning hours and after 3:00 pm.

The Lower Sac is up to 36,000cfs for a while.  Lake Shasta is too full for this time of year.  I think we can expect the release to continue at this level for at least a week.  I like the flows to get down to 20,000cfs for good fishing.  Stay tuned!

We have a group of 7 anglers at Eagle Canyon for the next two days.  I stopped in for about an hour this morning.  The sun was out, the water was clear, and people were hooking up!  I saw several fish landed and several more that got away.  Fish were eating leech patterns size 8 in black and orange.  The water was surprisingly clear so I think smaller flies will be a good bet later in the day.

Here is a guest report from Dave, one of our regulars at Eagle Canyon:We had very limited visibility in the ponds due to recent rains. It didn't rain a lot during our day but at times the wind gusts were in the 45+MPH range. We managed to land 7 fish between us, some smaller and a few slugs. Big flies earlier in the day with smaller flies getting grabs toward evening.

Red Hot

We moved Opening Day 2017 up one day to avoid some nasty weather forecast for Saturday.  Our opening day crew from the California Walnut Company enjoyed a beautiful day and some great fishing.  It definitely felt like the calm before the storm.  When we arrived fish were cruising and midging in the surface film.  The fishing was red hot in the morning, with fish hooked on every 2nd or 3rd cast for much of the morning.  After lunch the fishing slowed down a little, but fishing was still productive.  The hot flies today were brown rubberlegs size 8 and olive crystal buggers size 8.  Some fish were caught on smaller nymphs, too.  The average fish was around 5 pounds.  The biggest I saw landed was about 10 pounds.  One of our guests reported landing fish up to 28".
