We hosted a great group of guys at Eagle Canyon today.  Many of them were first-time fly fishers.  These guys caught on pretty fast.  Everyone hooked fish and almost every one in the group landed at least one fish.  The best fish of the day was about 12 pounds.  Our best flies were pheasant tails size 14-16, brown jimmy legs size 8, oregon cheese sucker spawn, and red copper johns size 18.

Although the fishing on the Applegate has improved, low clear water conditions is making the Steelhead fishing a challenge. Both traditional swing fishing as well as dead drift sub surface fishing has produced several fish per day. The weather outlook is calling for rain Tuesday night so the fishing should get real good for the remainder of the month. Remember the Applegate closes on March 31 and I still have a few days available the last week of March. Give us a call at Confluence and try fishing this small Steelhead river.

Red Hot

Our host Cory Drenon reports that fishing was incredible today at Eagle Canyon. Guest Duke from Fremont had this to say:  Excellent action on nymphs under the indicator.  Strong fish with some acrobatics, too.  Fish hit throughout the day. Guest John from San Jose reports Another great experience at Eagle Canyon.  The fish are hotter than ever.

We enjoyed a beautiful St. Patrick's Day on the Lower Sac on Sunday.  The nymph grab was red hot from about 10am to 3pm.  My clients John & Dennis hooked and landed a lot of fish, including many picture fish in the 18-20 range.  Fishing got good again in the last hour of the day.  We had good luck on a variety of nymphs, but most of our fish came on size 18 baetis patterns and size 16 PMD nymphs.

The Lower Sac is pretty good right now.  We spent the day swinging flies with 5wt switch rods and fishing nymphs in the shallow riffles.  The nymphing was much more productive, especially before lunch.  George landed a nice 18-20 rainbow on a S&M nymph.  The dry fly fishing never got going today, but it was fun spending a day not doing any side-drifting.

Okay

We spent a beautiful day chasing steelies and browns on the Trinity today.  We hooked one brown, but the hatch never really got going due to excessively sunny conditions.  We did hook three steelhead on our spey rods, though.  Not bad for March!

The Lower Sac fished pretty good today.  Caddis are all over in the air, but the fish responded more to mayfly nymphs than caddis pupas today.  Most of our fish came on small olive mayfly nymph patterns.  We hooked and landed several really large fish today.  One looked to be about 22 but that one didn't make it into the net.  We had one brief hookup on a dry and the rest of our fish came on nymphs.

The calender might still say it's Winter but it sure feels allot like Spring here,I guided Steve from Sparks today on the Lower Sac, the fishing was good and the weather was fantastic ! How can you not have a good time. Steve hooked a dozen or more wild rainbows up to 18, the nymph grab was best in the late A.M. but continued on all day. Small dark caddis nymph imitations worked the best and there was a good hatch of small caddis but few fish looking up.The Lower Sac will continue to fish great and the weather has been awesome !

Fishing was pretty good this morning at Eagle Canyon.  I saw several fish landed before I left around 11am.  The hot fly was a cinnamon leech size 10 - it looked like a Denny Rickards pattern.

I drifted and fished the lower part of the Applegate River on Tuesday with Confluence guide Gino Benero. The weather was cold and raining and the fishing was tough. The good thing about the day were the numbers of fish we saw on the move up the river. We only hooked one fish but we thought they were more intrested in moving than eating our flies. The week ahead looks like great conditions for fishing the Applegate and Rogue Rivers. Both Gino and I have some dates available, so if you can break away you should try some Southern Oregon Steelhead fishing! The photo is the one success story we had for the day.

The Lower Sac fished really well for me today.  The action was great from the get-go, with numerous hookups in the first half-hour.  We even watched an osprey grab a fish that was being played by one of Ryan Johnston's clients.  The nymph grab was good throughout the day and we had some very good dry fly fishing after lunch.  There is a good caddis hatch right now and there are also some assorted mayflies about.  We landed fish on dries, sinking lines, and nymphs today.

Gold Beach is more like South Beach these days...sunny and warm. Not exactly good winter steelhead conditions...still better than not fishing though! The bigger rivers still provide some opportunity to swing up a chrome fish though...and we will keep trying.

I stopped by Eagle Canyon briefly Saturday morning.  The weather was clear and windy.  I watched one of our guests land a nice fish on a zebra midge under an indicator.

We're still finding a few fresh wild fish on the Trinity.  They're getting a bit more spread out, though.  We encountered four fish today and landed two of them.  One ate an egg pattern and the other ate a pt nymph.  The weather has been great and there is NOBODY on the river.  There aren't a lot of places where you can catch a steelhead and not see another angler all day long.
