Fall River: , by Andrew Harris: Last Day on Fall River: 5 stars

Today was my last day of the season on Fall River.  It started out really slow.  We spent all morning trying a lot of different flies and techniques and none of them worked.  The main problem was that the micro-baetis hatch was incredibly thick.  There were mats of size 22-26 mayflies on the surface.  The fish were chowing them, but we didn't stand a chance competing against the shear numbers of bugs on the water.  We drove really far from that part of the river and after lunch we found an area that had none of the little bugs and lots of the big mayflies.  There were size 14-16 PMDs and callibaetis in good numbers from 1pm to 4pm.  We found several good spots where we could drift our flies to big fish.  At the end of the day we found a honey hole where about 20 huge fish were chowing dries in six inches of water.  My clients Dennis and Eric hooked many of those fish and landed quite a few 17-19" rainbows on dries.  It was pretty amazing, and a great way to close out my Fall River season.
