Question: If I had to buy one spey rod, what would it be?

Answer: Choosing your first spey rod can be a tough decision. Sage called the Traditional 8136 their SUV of spey rods a couple of years ago. This is one of the best spey rods ever built. Its versatility is what got it the SUV designation. Powerful but not stiff. Soulful but not soft. Not too long, not too short. Nice and light. Good for summer and winter steelhead alike. It is still one of my favorites. This rod can pretty much do it all. But you have to remember, spey rods are tools. Finding the right tool for the job is key. As an angler, you have to figure out what your priorities are. Do you like to sink-tip fish? Dry line? Are you fishing big water, small? Do you fish year round, or just in the late summer with a floating line and traditional fly (Skunk, Silver Hilton, etc)-? There is a lot to consider when buying a spey rod. Set your priorities and do your research. Cast and consult with professional guides and instructors. They should be able to match you up with the right rod and line combination suitable for the water you fish. Good luck!
