Question: Why spey cast?

Answer: Spey (two-handed) casting and fishing is a method of fly-fishing that allows the angler to cast more efficiently, further, with better line control, and also allows the angler to cover more water faster. A spey rod is a tool; its job is to make angling more effective in most situations. Spey casting requires very little room behind the angler, allowing the angler to fish water previously unfishable. It allows the angler better line control. This means mending, stalling, hovering, positioning, and controlling the speed of the fly is much easier. Sink-tip fishing is also easier with a two-handed rod because it is easier to cast. Fishing weighted flies is less work with a spey rod. Greater distances are attainable with a spey rod. It is less tiresome because the workload is distributed evenly between two hands. And last, but not least, we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun!
