Question: What is a “D” loop?
Answer: The “D” loop is the back cast of a spey cast. The “D” loop is what loads the rod in a spey cast. The “D” loop is formed by driving the line back and off to the side of the angler. The rod is stopped at 2 O’clock (just like in the backcast of a single hand cast) as the rod loads and the “D” loop forms. Meanwhile, the anchor “holds the load” created by the “D” loop until the forward cast relieves the anchor and the rod unloads. Without a “D” loop, there is no spey cast. It is the single most important part of any spey cast.
