Great

I spent the last couple of days fishing with good clients John and Francis on the Lower Sac, the Lower Sac has been fishing Good to Great ! The quality of the Trout on the Lower Sac always amazes me, there aren't that many places in the world within a relatively short drive of a couple million people, where one is able to catch beautiful wild rainbows on a regular basis. Conditions should remain stable for the next week or two, then the flows will raise to there Summer time levels, once the flows stabilize the fishing should be good through the Summer. Get out there and get you some !

As we approach our last week of Eagle Canyon, we're getting some good BWO hatches. Bring BWO nymphs and dries!
We've had 10-15 lb fish netted this week- the big boys don't get pinned very often!
Floating lines continues to be the tool of choice, with 9 foot leaders, sized down to 3-5X. Damsel & mayfly nymphs with a midge trailer will a surefire setup-- if using an indicator, balanced leaches and olive micro mays(size 16-18s) have been working best.

Wow!  The past three days has been very productive.  Friday was with the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers and Larry and Jim both hooked into a lot of really nice fish and eggs and PMD nymphs.  Saturday and Sunday was family outing and Eric's first time fly fishing.  The fish were super grabby and Eric hooked over 25 fish his first day!  The flows are still at 5,000 cfs and the weather is perfect.  No need to wait any longer - now is the time to book your spring fishing trip!

Drifted the lower Sac with Don & Ray with the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers from San Luis Obispo. With countless hookups, we landed some hard fighting rainbows. Don tied into this buck (photo attached) that had his reel screaming! Fighting the fish on a 5X dropper, he did a great job bringing this hog to the net.

This is a great time of year to float this river. The flows have been around 5,000 CFS, and the fish are hungry! Go book a Confluence guide and catch some fish;)

We hosted the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers club from San Luis Obispo today.  They did a 4-boat trip with us on the Sac as part of our Eagle Canyon/Lower Sac combo special.  Tomorrow they will fish Eagle Canyon.

Fishing was really good for us today.  Art and Lew were quite adept at the indicator fishing techniques we use on the Lower Sac and did very well.  We hooked fish up to 20" and landed tons of 15-17" rainbows today.  PMD nymphs were the best bet.

Thanks to the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers and good luck at Eagle Canyon tomorrow!

Spent the day scouting and speed boating down the Yuba yesterday. This was my first trip down the Yuba since the big water push in March. The river is still racing. There was very little water to fish with a lot of confidence. To fish the good spots the boat had to be in really fast water.  Managed to hook and land one on the day. More interesting was the changes in the river. There were plenty of spots on the river that have completely changed and the river created an entirely new channel just below Sycamore. Crazy. Good news was the March Browns were out and when the flows come down a little, I think the Yuba will be a great place to fish. Can't wait to learn the new river.

We had a "wind advisory" day on the Lower Sac today.  Persistent 15-20mph winds made fishing challenging in many areas.  The river still fished pretty good, though.  Usually when it's that windy the fish seem to be off the bite.  Today we landed a few nice 16-18" rainbows, hooked plenty of medium-sized fish, and lost a huge one that looked to be about 22".  PMD nymphs were the best fly for us today - the PMD hatch lasted from 10am to 4pm.

The past two days were full of a lot of action.  My clients hooked fish all day long - both days!  The river is in great shape and the fish are chowing on eggs and PMD nymphs.  The weather has been beautiful and the river is fishing as good as it gets.

We hosted the Diablo Valley Fly Fishers from the Walnut Creek area today at Eagle Canyon.  They had excellent weather and the fish were on the grab.  I helped out for about an hour and almost everyone had landed a fish by the time I left.  There were a couple 10lb+ fish in the mix, too.  I saw fish hooked on wiggle nymphs, tailwater tinys, pheasant tails, and various zebra-midge style patterns.

We have just opened up two new dates at Eagle Canyon: April 15 and 17.  These dates are available for groups of 2-8 anglers.  We also have room for 2 anglers on April 11th.  Conditions are great at Eagle Canyon right now.  The water is very clear and sight-fishing opportunities are abundant.

We're approaching our last couple weeks of the season at EC- In the last couple weeks we've had several guest see their fly line backing!
The most successful anglers lately have been casting a floating line & long(ish) leader with a slow retrieve as well as using small indicators w/ 1 or 2 flies suspended underneath. Sounds easy enough right?

Flies have been getting smaller and smaller as the weeks go on. Yeah they might hit a size 6 black leach, but don't spend too much time trying. Size 16-18 Hogans s&m, (flashback & regular) pheasant tails, tailwater tinys, olive micro mays, prince nymphs, as well as midges & sucker spawn (oregon cheese, glo-ro) have been the main meal ticket.

There's only a couple open days left so don't wait to book!

Eagle Canyon is getting technical these days.  We had beautiful weather, but sometimes that makes for challenging fishing.  We could see the big trout swimming around ignoring our flies today.  The morning was particularly slow.  The best time of day was 2-4pm.  Most fish were hooked on nymphs under indicators.  4X tippet worked okay.  Some of the best flies included olive tailwater tiny's size 18, micro mayflies size 16, Hogan's S&M nymphs olive size 16, and other small mayfly nymphs.  Fish were also hooked on crystal buggers and damsel nymphs on the retrieve.

The Sac is getting better by the day.  The visibility is improving daily and the flows are coming back down.  After several days at 20,000 cfs, the flows are dropping gradually and should be back at 5,000 cfs by the 28th.  The improving conditions made for an unforgettable day for Jim and his son Trey.  Their first time floating the Sac and they hooked so many fish we lost count!  The fish are getting really grabby and it is only going to get better as the flows continue to drop.  Hungry fish and beautiful spring weather makes for perfect time to book your spring fishing trip on the Sac!

Today we took our Project Healing Waters group out on the Lower Sac.  Conditions were challenging with flows near 18,000cfs, but the fishing was fairly productive.

The river is scheduled to get back down to 5,000cfs by Monday.

We hosted a Bay Area chapter of Project Healing Waters today at Eagle Canyon.  The group is organized through the Diablo Valley Fly Fishers club in Walnut Creek.  They sure picked a beautiful day to fish Eagle Canyon!  The weather was perfect and the fish were receptive - after a while.  The bite was slow in the morning but picked up in the afternoon.  Our best flies included flashback PTs size 16, olive micro mayflies size 18, olive tailwater tiny's size 18, glo bugs in various colors, split-case PMDs size 16, and red copper johns size 16.  We did best fishing nymphs under an indicator, but fish were also caught on streamers.  The best fish landed was over 10 pounds and we had a hook-up and lengthy battle with a fish that was around 12-13#.
