Despite having a slow start this season, anglers are tying into 5-10 lbs fish daily. Having patients and presenting the fly in manner that won't spook the fish is critical. Small nymphs (size 14-18 flashback PTs) and (size8-14 buggers in various colors) on a slow retrieve are getting consistent hookups. Dress warm and fix those pinholes in your waders- the water gets cold quick!

River conditions are ideal on the Trinity right now.  The river is high and clear, but not too clear.  Fish are on the move and we're getting them in bunches when we find them.  Today was really tough all morning.  We made a lot of great drifts through great water without much action.  From 2pm on it all paid off, though.  The afternoon was excellent with 6 or 7 adults ending up in the net and others getting away.

Fishing is very good on the Trinity right now.   I had a great day with Don and Ken today.  We saw almost no other anglers and we put a lot of fish in the net.  We landed a couple bigger fish today, too.  Most of the fish are 3-5 pounds right now but we landed two in the 7-8 pound range today.  Lots of wild fish today, too.

The Trinity River fished very well for us today.  The river is a little high but still very clear.  There are a lot of fish in the system and we found them throughout our long float today.  We are catching a mixed bag of wild and hatchery fish right now, mostly 3 to 6 pounds.  Conditions look to remain excellent throughout this week.  We have steady rain in the forecast for the next two days, but not so much that the river will blow out.

We had our toughest Opening Day ever today.  The weather was very cold and there was even a little bit of ice around the edges of the lakes in the morning.  Even though the fish were not very active, seven of the eight anglers in the party managed to land at least one fish.  Our host Sam says that pink egg patterns were the best fly of the day.

Today's challenge was staying warm.  The cold was quickly forgotten when Pat hooked and landed a nice hatchery fish on her fish cast.  The day started great - but turned into an amazing  day of steelheading every angler (and guide) dreams of! The flows have come down slightly and the water is clearing, but that will change with this next series of storms that are headed our way.  Pray for rain, book your first steelhead trip of the new year, and dress warm!   Tight lines

Had the pleasure yesterday of guiding Phil & David from San Francisco on the Trinity. It was cold but not quite cold enough for your guides to freeze up. Steelhead weather. Using spey and switch rods we immediately hooked up with a nice adult hen. With several brought to the net and many more lost, it's a matter of covering water and finding them.

It was a very cold day and the fish didn't seem very interested in eating, but Craig and his son Matt from Santa Barbara worked hard and managed to hook three steelhead.  The flows are very fishable, and the water is very clear.  Looks like we have a short break before the next series of storms hit NorCal.  2016 is only a few days away - it's time to book your first steelhead trip of the year!

The Steelheading this past week has been Solid, Cold  & Rainy weather has bumped the flows up, got the fish moving and has added to the overall Steelhead experience. We are seeing a good push of hatchery Hens now with a few wild ones thrown in, they're following the push of Bucks we saw a month ago. The Winter run should start to show after the Holidays .

What do you do after an epic day on the Trinity - you try to duplicate it on the Lower Sac.  The day started out rainy and cold, but once the temps started to warm - so did the action.  The numbers weren't anything special, but the fish definitely were!  If you think the Sac shuts down this time of year - think again!

Our day started out amazing, my client Pat hooked and landed several really nice fish before lunch.  The day started out so amazing - but then it completely shut down after lunch.  The approaching storm and dropping temps shut down the bite.  We still had an epic day of steelheading!  The recent storms have brought in good numbers of fresh fish.  The good news is  - the extended forecast is calling for several days of much needed rain!  Keep your fingers crossed and start thinking about booking your New Years steelhead trip!

We just hosted a great group from the Diablo Valley Fly Fishers the last two days.  Gino Bernero, Randy Hamann, Jay Cockrum and I guided these folks on many different floats, from Lewiston down to Junction City.  Day 1 was pretty tough with rain all day long and high flows.  Nonetheless, several club members hooked fish.  Day 2 was excellent with the river dropping and clearing.  Club member and trip leader Rich and I shared a pretty amazing day with lots of hookups and tons of solitude on the river.I haven't seen fishing this good on the Trinity in several years.  If your schedule is flexible you should get up here and fish with one of our guides this coming week.  It should be awesome!

In steelhead fishing standards, fishing has been excellent. We have a lot more fish in the system thanks to the rain we've been having. There's been some really nice fish brought to the net lately. The fishing should continue to be good throughout the next couple months as we should start seeing the winter run steelies.  Matt Murdough landed a mix of hatchery and wild fish, with a few exceptionally big ones breaking off. Matt did really well going 3 for 3 days tying into fish.

Fishing continues to be excellent on the Trinity River.  We are getting regular doses of rain and that keeps the fish here on the move and on the bite.  The next couple weeks should bring more outstanding fishing.  We are catching a mix of wild and hatchery fish.  Most fish are in the 3-6 pound range but we're hooking fish in the 8 pound plus range almost every day.

Swinging for Steelhead this past week has ranged from good to Epic ! The Summer/Fall Steelhead of the Trinity have finally left the Frog Water that they have been occupying  for week's on end and are on there final push, this has put them back into prime Steelhead water and made them accessible to the Spey/Swing angler. This past week, Spey junkies John and Hossein have had Good to Great success swinging up a mix of hatchery and wild Steel ! Over the next several weeks our Summer/Fall Steelhead will be making there final push to there spawning grounds and will be leaving the door open for the much anticipated return of the Winter run, we generally see Winter fish start showing late December to early January.  We have finally entered a wet weather pattern on the Trinity which has improved fishing greatly and it looks to continue for some time !

The Southern Oregon Coast finally got some much needed rain, but a little too much for fishing.  We need it though and its part of the whole game, so I can deal with my first blowout of the winter steelhead season.  The rivers on the Southern Oregon Coast are all totally blown, mega, as it continues to rain hard all day today.  Nor Cal is a better option for chasing chrome fish.  The Smith and Klamath are blown, but some of the coastal rivers to the South in Nor Cal are still fishable at the moment, as fresh chrome winter steelhead are starting to enter the systems.  Further inland, the Trinity got some much needed rain, and is in excellent condition.   I might open up a few days next week if the rivers start to drop.  E mail me if you are interested in chasing the first winter fish of the season.  I have some availability left in January for the Oregon Coast, February on the Olympic Peninsula is already booked, and I only have a few days left in March and April.  Contact me if you want to chase truly chrome fish.

Awesome day on the Trinity. You don't get days like this everyday... You just don't. Matt Murdough from Santa Monica owned it today. Every fish he brought to the net reminded me of an ex-girlfriend; Beautiful and Angry. While today was his first time ever fishing Trinity, he adapted quickly and had a few fish landed within the first hour.    The good news is the much needed rain has pushed a lot more fish into the system- the bad news? It's still steelhead fishing, and these guys aren't exactly known for jumping into your net. Get a hold of myself or one of the knowledgeable Confluence guides and greatly improve your chances of getting hooked up with a hard-fighting steelie!

Just back from a couple days of guiding for early Winter Steelhead on the Lower Klamath, Wednesday fished well with a good mix of wild 1/2 pounder's and Coastal Cutthroat. We were one day away from swinging up an adult or two but the latest storm hit us hard with wind and heavy rain which left us with a river on the rise at over 500 cfs an hour and was completely blown by this morning. Life of a Winter Steeheader ! The Lower Klamath , in any given Winter, only offers a few brief windows of opportunity for the Spey Angler where Swinging a fly for dime bright Winter Steelhead is realistic, flexibility is key. Feel free to contact me if your interested in Spey casting on some of the most epic swing water in the lower 48 !

The Trinity River fished incredibly well for us today.  My clients Steve and Jon hooked about 10 days worth of steelhead in a single day.  It was the most productive single day I've ever experienced on the Trinity.  It was like a really good day of trout fishing, except the fish were all steelhead from 3 to 10 pounds. It was an incredibly wet day, but not too cold.  The elevated flows and relatively warm water seemed to get the fish on the move and on the grab.  With the river higher than normal, we were able to fish a lot of water that doesn't hold fish in lower flows.  These travelling lanes were very productive, as were the usual spots.  It seemed like there was a fish behind every rock today! The outlook for the next couple weeks is really good.  We were in the middle of a really big push of fish today that should spread out and provide for some great fishing in the near term.
