Steelhead fishing on the Upper Rogue is on fire.  Water levels are just under the historic average for this time of year and after a small shot of rain fish were on the move.  We are seeing good size fish mixed in with average size steelhead.  No need to start really early, we are putting on the water around 8:00 am.  While nymphing out of the drift boat we are recycling runs a lot in order to hook up.  Anchoring up and working a run is also working really well.  On the spey rod we are also finding success with traditional flies swung throughout the water column.  Weather has been all over the place. We've had temps into the 80's in the afternoon after chilly mornings.  Rain has been welcome last week and this week.  Temps are going to climb back into the high 70's before dropping back down next week.  The steelhead are starting to color up with a few bright fish mixed in.  When they take the fly, hold on.  They are still fighters and hooking them in faster water is exciting for everyone.  While fishing is good remember these are still steelhead and hard work is the only way.  Come prepared to see four seasons of weather in an afternoon.

Winding down October we did not see the weather we wanted.  As I said in previous reports this made fishing difficult.  The last week fishing has improved.  We saw an increase in the number of fish hooked up and fish landed.  While we are not seeing the number of fish in the system as last year we are seeing a bigger average class of steelhead.  Over the last week we continued to work runs over and over.  On three different sections of river we had success with steelhead brought to the net.  We are hooking fish throughout the day and have even landed some in water where you wouldn't think a fish would be hanging out.  ODFW has started rerunning hatchery fish that have been caught in the trap.  These fish will be marked with a hole punched in a gill plate.  The locations of the rerun drops are usually not announced.  Within a few day the fish will start to spread out through the river.  Looking into early November we have rain forecasted for 7 of the next 10 days.  This bodes well to bring the river and it tributaries up and get more fish moving.  I have caught fish throughout November and well into December.  We will also start running into Coho.  It's a short run of fish, but they are a lot of fun.  Nymph trips and swing trips we are finding more fish.  I still have good open dates in November.  The opportunities are there for Rogue River Steelhead.  If you have questions about the Rogue or the steelhead in it, give me call.  I would love to answer your questions and book a date to take you out on the river.

The Rogue River has seen weeks and weeks of low water, lots of high sun, and little to no cloud cover.  This has made fishing difficult for indicator and swing fly fishing.  There is some good news on the horizon though.  We have rain.  This will freshen up the river, get the fish moving around, and bring fish up that are currently lower in the system.  On the indicator rigs, flies are the usual suspects.  Ugly bugs ranging in size from 4 to 8 in a variety of colors, from midnight fire, gold and black, copper and black, and coffee.  For the dropper fly we are running egg patterns near redds, copper swans/johns, brassies, and others.  On the swung fly, sink tips as soon as the sun is up.  T-11 with a traditional or smaller intruder fly are my go to options right now.  Skating flies is always fun and I am doing that on the first run of the day and running through it again with a sink tip.  We had a couple of grabs with pink and blue last week but, black and blue are still the top colors for swung flies.  Even though fishing has been hard, we are still finding fish.  Rowing runs multiple times, holding the boat, and fishing places where you don't think fish will be have resulted in fish hooked and landed.  The opportunities are there.  Its just a matter of putting in the effort and staying consistent throughout the day.  More rain is coming later this week and that will help with the fishing.   Mornings are chilly, with temps in the low to mid-forties.  Afternoon temps last week were still in the 80's, but the forecast is showing 50's-60's the next 10 days.  Layer up, bring rain gear, and work hard.  The steelhead are here.

Fishing conditions have not been ideal the last week and looking at the weather, hard conditions will continue.  Little to no cloud cover, hot days, and lots of sun.  Forecast for the next 10 days is in the high eighties.  Cool mornings in the high forties and low fifties make fishing in the morning a must.  We have been putting in just before sunrise and have found good success.  Steelhead are here, however, we are working hard to find them.  Water conditions are good.  The river is clear with good flows coming out of Lost Creek.  With the amount of water we had in the late spring, the flows were able to stay around average during the summer, if not a little higher.  This brought up a number of steelhead in June and those fish are still around.    We are making multiple drifts through holding water which has resulted in a decent amount of hook-ups and fish brought to the net.  We are seeing more salmon on the redds and the egg pattern will quickly become the fly of choice.  On the swing we have been skating first thing in the morning and then switching to sink tips once the sun is up.  Smaller tradtitional flies and small profile intruder type flies are the go to right now.  Multi-density heads are a good thing to have in your bag to go along with a sink-tip for the deep runs in the afternoon. While weather conditions have made it tough, we are still very much into steelhead.  Working the entire run and not being afraid to row back up and drift again multiple times along with holding the boat in place have brought us fish.  The opportunites are there, putting in the effort and being patient will do the rest.I still have select dates in October.  November is open.  Come up to the Rogue for your chance at putting summer run steelhead in the net.

On Sunday Ron and John drove up from California and fished the Rogue with me.  We had rain the day we fished and the day before.  The Army Corps of Engineers started kicking more water out of the dam a couple days prior to trout opening and outflows were increased every other day it seemed.  Right now the flows are right around the historic average.  The release of water did slow the hatch down, but we worked hard and found fish.  With Ron and John we started mid-morning and found it to be slow.  A few fly changes and a dropper later we were into them.  Ron landed the most and biggest coming in around 15 inches.  Fishing got better as the day went on and the temps started to climb.  We saw more bug activity and kept the dry dropper set-up.  We found smaller fish liked the dry flies and our big fish mostly came on the dropper.  Purple Chubby's had the most success on top and a Copper John style nymph in red or green was the go to dropper. Fishing is good right now and will get better as we get into June.  Outflow from the dam should remain consistent and the hatch will pick up.  The fish are definitely looking up.  I have limited availibilty so head over and pick a date.

Today is the first day of spring and the fishing is on fire.  We fished in the rain and were able to get on some absolutely amazing fishing.  With a 30 inch hatchery fish coming to the net.  Nymphing wise the Rogue cannot be beat right now.  Swinging flies is improving and is still a great way to spend the day.  The river was a bit off color last week and has cleared up.  We finally got a decent shot of rain and that brought the river up enough that the steelhead moved around and moved up some.  Fishing is great throughout the entire system and is only going to get better for the next few weeks.  Temps are going to climb with highs in the low 70's this week.  Break out the flip-flops and let's go fishing.

We are into the winter steelhead right now.  The past week has been great for winter fish.  Multiple trips produced multiple hook ups with a number of those fish brought to hand.  Others that we were trying to bring to hand gave us a great show and those steelhead found a way to come off the hook.  We have fish spread out throughout the entire system and we are into them consistently. On our nymphing trips we are using Otis and Ugly bugs as our lead fly and running a Copper Swan or Copper John as our dropper.  Moving the indicator to match the water depth is essential to ensure the bugs are where the steelhead will see them.  For the folks that prefer the swung fly.  Ho Bo Spey, Burnt Chicken, and Perpatrator flies are all the rage at the moment.  Expect to use ten feet of T-11 to get your flies down to the zone where the fish are.  There are certain spots that a heavier or lighter tip will be needed.  I will put those on for you when we need them.  If you don't have T-11, do not worry, I have plenty.  If two-handed casting is something you may be interested in, I have rods and reels for you to try.  The river has shaped up nicely despite little to no precipatation.  Mornings are cold, warming into the 50's by afternoon.  We have weather forecasted so bring a rain jacket and layers.  Keep in mind these are steelhead and we are gonna work hard to get them.  That hard work is paying off and we are into fish.  We have about a month left of great fishing for our winter run.

We are starting to see our winter run of steelhead become more consistent.  Last week we had a number of encounters on the swung fly.  The river is low, cold, and clear.  Later launch times and fishing right up until dark is the approach that is working right now.  On our spey trips we are using black and blue Ho Bo Spey type flies and a hot head leech.  On days with a lack of cloud cover running a pink or orange fly has moved fish as well.  Running the flies deep with 10 feet of T-11 and on specific runs T-14 is putting them in the zone.  In the nymph game bigger Otis and Ugly Bugs in a dark color with a hot head is getting us results.  Running a dropper off of the stonefly like a Copper John or Copper Swan in red or green is the go to.  With the minimal flows coming out of the dam we are contantly changing our indicator depths to put the flies in the zone on our trips.  In addition to steelhead we have brought in Rainbow and Cutthroat trout.  We are seeing these come in on the dropper flies.  A couple aggressive cutties have hit the swung fly as well.  Back rowing and fishing runs multiple times is productive and dragging the boat back up when we can't row it is effective.  Rain is in the forecast and this should trigger more fish to make their way up.  The next four to six weeks will only continue to get better as those fish need to move up river.

Southern Oregon is getting hit with same system Northern California is.  With the Army Corps of Engineers keeping outflow from the  Lost Creek dam around 900...ish the Rogue River has been skinny lately.  This has meant when we find steelhead we find a lot of them stacked up.  With this big shot of rain we are gonna see the river level bump up.  We can expect to see the fish moving around a bit more and find more fish moving up.  We have had great days on the river mixed in with some hard ones.  It is steelheading after all.  Yesterday we brought two to the net and lost a handful more, including a nice fish that took an epic run and gave us some jumps before coming off the hook.  Nymping from the boat has proven most effective with fishing from the bank at times to really work some water producing fish as well.  Swinging flies has been rewarding with multiple hook ups a day.  October is just about done and November is gonna be good.  Winter weather is coming so it'll be wet but the fishing will be hot.

The last couple of days have been good on the Rogue River.  We are fishing hard under an indicator and fishing flies on the swing hasn't been too bad.  We've brought fish to hand nymphing and had a few grabs on the sink tip.  This year has been anything but normal.  The Army Corps of Engineers cut the outflow to a level that hasn't been seen in years.  This storm system that is over us right now is dumping at lot of water and we saw a decent rise in water levels overnight.  Fishing has been hard but we have had success working areas we know.  We are going to see rain through Wednesday (10/27) which is going to bring the water levels up and get the fish that are holding low in the system moving.  The season is not over yet and we are going to have more fish moving up river with this rain.  I still have some dates available and would love to take you out on the Upper Rogue.

I had an opportunity to fish with Dylan Woodrum up in the Klamath Basin, targeting trout on the Williamson and Wood Rivers. As we were working on a video project, it was imperative that we put some fish in the net and guess what? The Williamson and the Wood did NOT disappoint! Dylan's wife, Kim, joined us and we had a really great two days. This was the second time I fished the Williamson and the rumors continue to be true... there are some big fish in that river! Throughout the day we caught a number of fish, most being in the 18 to 24 inch size range. We were primarily swinging flies hand tied by Dylan and I must say that it was pretty impressive seeing pods of dozens upon dozens of BIG fish in various locations throughout the day. On our second day, we went to the Wood River. Both the Williamson and Wood Rivers flow into the Upper Klamath Lake, but the two rivers are pretty different. While the Williamson is a medium sized river and has riffles and pools and a fair amount of changing river characteristics, the Wood is your classic spring creek, surrounded by meadows. We used a variety of techniques, including both swinging small streamers and chucking the 'ole bobber with nymphs. One could have easily used a dry fly hopper, especially after a 16 inch redband dive bombed my indicator! We put a lot of fish in the net and had constant action throughout the morning and right up to getting off the river before I made my way back to Red Bluff. Dylan is a very friendly, knowledgable, and fishy guy, so you can't go wrong with booking a trip with him. His experience on Klamath Basin water was evident by the consistently productive guidance he provided throughout both days. While we will have a full Klamath Basin Fly Fishing video in the future, I put together a quick little River Report with Dylan that you can check out here: https://youtu.be/bjErXO8Q6Uc

We have a guest who is looking for a fishing buddy for a March 1-2 trip on the southern Oregon coast with Gino.  Gino says fishing has been fair to good.  Early March has been good the last two years on the coast.  Gino is fully booked so this is your last chance to spend a day on the water with him this winter steelhead season.

Happy Thanksgiving!  Fall steelhead season didn't really exist in southern oregon, insead we had an endless summer.  Up until a few days ago, the typical day on the Rogue was a freezing cold morning followed by a cloudless sky and raging bright sun for the rest of the day.  We still managed to swing up some great fish, in relatively uncrowded conditions.  December could be really interesting, as I'm sure there are plenty of fish still waiting for a bump in the flows to make their way up river.

Hello everyone, This is the most important fishing report we will post all year, and will impact reports for years to come.  I am asking all of you to sign this very important petition to help protect wild steelhead on the Southern Oregon Coast.  It is very easy, just follow the link below.  For a little background, there are only twelve rivers left in the lower 48 states and Canada where anglers can still legally harvest an amazing wild steelhead. All twelve of these rivers are in Oregon, and ten of those rivers are in the Southwest Zone where we regularly fish and enjoy.  We don't need to catch them to enjoy our experience, but we need to know they are there, and sadly, there are fewer around each year.  The sad reality on the coast is that the wild steelhead populations are drastically decreasing, with harvest rates increasing.  This is obviously unsustainable.  We need to ask the ODFW Commission to require the release of all wild steelhead in this region if we wish to preserve this magnificent resource for the future.  Please sign this petition, it only takes a minute.  If you have any questions regarding this issue, please feel free to contact me directly.https://www.change.org/p/oregon-fish-and-wildlife-commission-catch-release-for-wild-steelhead-in-southwest-oregon Thanks everyone, and you can do more!  See below...  From Charles Gehr:Along with signing the petition, you can also help by taking a few more steps:1. The ODFW Commission is taking public comment on the petition. You can email your comments to odfw.commission@state.or.us (respectful language please). Comments submitted before close of business tomorrow (Nov. 20) will be printed out and given to the commissioners in their pre-meeting packets (preferred). Comments submitted after tomorrow up until 48 hours before the meeting will be printed the day of the meeting and given to the Commissioners in attendance. Obviously, they will not be reading a stack of printed emails the day of the meeting, but they'll see the size of the stack of comments for the petition.2. If you want to have the most impact possible, you can attend the Commissioners meeting in Salem, OR on December 6 at 8am. The more people we can have in attendance the better. To give perspective on this, we tried to get this regulation change made last year. We had significantly more petition signatures and public comments than our counterparts. At the commissioners meeting it was an even split, 12 people testifying for the petition and 12 against. End result was, we lost and here we are again. I understand and respect everyone's busy schedules and time for this effort, but if we can pack the room with people testifying for this petition it will be very difficult for the Commissioners to deny it.https://www.change.org/p/oregon-fish-and-wildlife-commission-catch-release-for-wild-steelhead-in-southwest-oregon

The upper Rogue has been hit and miss. Like everywhere else, the Rogue needs some rain to get fish moving. Bright and sunny days combined with low and clear water is not exactly ideal Fall steelhead conditions, but we are still swinging up some nice wild fish on days that fall upon odd numbers on the calendar..

After returning from another amazing hosted trip to British Columbia, it was great to get back home for some guide trips on the Rogue. It’s fly only season on the upper Rogue, which has some of the best swing water in the Pacific Northwest. If you are curious about Spey casting and want to learn how to swing flies, the Rogue is a fabulous venue.Yesterday my client Ken Frank wanted to work on his casting and swung up his first steelhead on a Spey rod, about a 9 pound buck who aggressively crushed the fly 2 seconds after it his the water. He put on quite the aerial display for us for a big buck steelhead. The day before I fished with Bryan and Jeff from Oregon, and Bryan encountered one super aggressive fish who ran straight at us and came off. We fished every awesome swing spot that we wanted, with relatively light angling pressure for the most part.

It was a festive few days on the river this weekend with lots of rafters, kayakers and paddleboarders out on the water enjoying the holiday weekend. The fishing was slow overall, but September is finally here and fishing should start to pick up. Fall is my favorite time of year to fish the Upper Rogue, the fall colors and fishing can be phenominal!
