Good Guided Marissa and Jon on the Upper + Lower Sac last couple days. It got pretty warm this weekend, but that didn't stop us from finding a few rainbows. On the LS we fished the side channels and found several fish in little slots + pockets. Golden stones + copper Johns (red/copper) + solitude stones worked for us. The flows dropped some 500 cfs in the last week and the fish seem to dig it. It's a nice fish when the guide has to get a pic in Marissa posing w her first rainbow trout! |
Great Spent several days this week on the Upper Sac fishing various techniques. Stone flies are hatching everywhere. It's not too hard to figure out what's on the menu for these fish- keep it simple! Nymphing/high-sticking is by far the most productive method to getting hookups. Swinging/stripping a sinktip line through the deep pools has been working too. The evening "magic hour" can come+go pretty quick so have a dry fly rod ready to fish- rigged and ginked! Upper Sac rainbows fight hard! Andreas w fish on |
Okay Guided Brandon & Donna on the lower + upper Sac. This was their first introduction to fly fishing and they did great! We've all been rookies at one point or another but Brandon + Donna did really well learning everything from how to cast to how to read water. Good times with good people! Brandon with his first fish on the fly Donna with her first ever trout! Upper Sac |
Okay Infamous Scott Coulter... This guy is one of best Spey casters on the planet. The man is surgical with a two hander in his hands- but today’s trip was mostly indicator fishing which brought out a little of the beast in Scotty;) We had a beautiful day on the river and dodged most the drift boat traffic. |
Okay Guided father/son Brad + Ben, both new to fly fishing. Ben (age 9) did a great job learning the ropes. After lunch he was ripping casts as far out as dad! Brad w his first LSac rainbow Ben with a little help from dad! |
Okay Guided Henry and Tommy from Project Healing Waters. We had the entire lower Sac to ourselves which is rare. I worked most the day with Tommy who had never fished before. By the end the float he could cast and mend with the best of ‘em. (See pic above with his first fish ever.) Yea buddy! Good job Tommy! |
Great Great day on the lower Sac with Kevin + Randal. The guys killed it today- every fish landed was big! Kevin with a nice buck Randal with his first Sac river rainbow! |
Okay Had a good time guiding Paul + Ted from San Raffael on the lower Sac. It was pretty warm today, we would hook a few fish in a stretcjh and then go without any grabs for a bit. PMD nymphs+crackback’s+prince nymphs fooled a few fish today. Wet wading + throwing dries Paul with his first lower Sac ‘bow |
Good Wet weather didn’t hold Greg+ Rich from getting into double digits today. The Sac is fishing good right now! Greg w a nice buck Rich w his first fish of the day |
Good Pete + son Peter did really well today at Eagle Canyon. We had perfect conditions with overcast and little wind. The guys stripped in small nymphs most the day and hooked into several nice sized fish in the 8-12 lbs range. |
Okay Guided Tom + Wayne from the Bay Area today on the L.Sac. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. The grab was a little sluggish today but we picked them off. Puppas+princes’+black copper johns were the big hitters today. At lunch today saw some huge stone flies on the rocks. Don’t forget about those size 4 rubber legs. Tom with his first L.Sac rainbow |
Good Helped guide a 5-boat trip with Project Healing Waters on the Lower Sac yesterday. Despite never fishing before Jessica & Shawn were fast learners and got into several hard fighting fish! The AM grab was a bit sluggish, but after lunch the action was consistent. Shawn with his first fish! Jessica with a nice ‘bow |
Slow The Cal-Shingle group had their work cut out for them with the wind+rain at EC but some fish were still caught. We tried all kinds of different flies -micro mays+midges fooled a few. Ryan with a monster! |
Good Guided Raffi + Brian today on the lower Sac. The AM grab was a bit on the slow side, but the action was nonstop after lunch. Another double digit day! |
Good Two left-handed guys both named Martin on the same boat sounds like trouble but we had a phenomenal day on lower Sac from start to finish. I honestly lost track of how many fish were landed but it was well in the double digits. The Sac is fishing really good right now- rubberlegs, micro-mays & prince nymphs has been a good rig lately. The Martins killed it! |
Okay Guided Steve + Paul from Madera yesterday on the Trinity. Paul hooked an adult steelhead on the first cast! Fishing has been a bit on the slow side but there's certainly fish in the river. Mayfly imitations have been consistently working. Paul with his first Trinity steelhead! |
Good Eagle Canyon fished well on Saturday- the grab was good in the AM but slowed up a bit in the afternoon. Red copper Johns, San Juan worms+ midges worked swimmingly. You Pyramid Lake guys should check this place out! Troy with a Monster! Judy got a nice rainbow all on her own! |
Okay Matt + Allen from Redbluff found some steelhead yesterday. Matt found the first fish of the day just minutes into the float. Lately it’s been about having the flies in the right place at the right time. Present the flies well and good things can happen. Tight lines. Matt w/ fish on! Lunch time |
Okay Had a good time with Tom + Geoff today on the Trinity. We got a break in the weather and had a beautiful day on the river. We found only half pounders today but that’s steelheadin’ for ya. Geoff with a wild juvinile |
Okay Had a good time guiding Tom from Walnut Creek. We floated upper river today and despite the low + clear conditions, Tom landed a nice adult steelhead. We’ve gotten some much anticipated rain which should push some more fish into the mix. Tom with his first 2018 steelhead! |
